add this to the top of your chat script:
REPORT 'CONNECT'
and add this to your pppd arguments
-r /tmp/ppp_rate"
then look in /tmp/ppp_rate for your initial connection speed.
I havent found out how to print this out to stdout, exept for with a
wrapper sript. I probably overlooked something..
