I'm completely confused.  I've been able to set up a PPP connection once before on DosLinux (a mini distribution) using eznet, but I haven't been able to set one up since.  I've read all the HOWTOs and FAQs, and none of them help.  I have a few feelings on what the problem might be, but I don't know what to do to correct it.

I'm able to dial out with my modem, but the data comes through (and I'm assuming goes out) incredibly slowly.  In fact, if I do not start typing in my login information before I get the prompts, I get an "Idle Time-out" message.  I read the Serial HOWTO and Modem HOWTO, and they only gave me ideas which I'll tell you in a second.  Also, I know it's going more slowly than it should be because I tried using a Windows terminal and even that went faster!

Here are some things that seem fishy with my setup, I'm not sure if all of them have to do with a PPP mailing list, but this seemed like the best place to bring up my problem:

When I start up, I get two different serial port initialization messages, one using ttyS00...02, the other using ttyS0...2.  My modem is on com 3, and one of them reports my modem's UART as 16550A (I think the one that says ttyS02), while the other says 16450.  I read something about 16450's using a 1K buffer and pretending to be 16550A's, could this be the problem?

Any help you could give would be appreciated.  Right now I have to use a crappy Windows computer as a make-shift proxy server, although I was planning on using Linux as the server (the SMART choice for servers).  If anyone could help fix my problem, I'd be very grateful.  Thank you for your time in reading this rather lengthy e-mail.
