My ISP has suddenly decided to got from the older script type of login to
PAP authentication. To top all this off, they've given me until Friday to
accomplish the change! However, when I try it, all I get from the system is
the following:

Jan 30 12:54:29 castle pppd[1721]: pppd 2.3.5 started by root, uid 0
Jan 30 12:54:53 castle pppd[1721]: Serial connection established.
Jan 30 12:54:54 castle pppd[1721]: Using interface ppp0
Jan 30 12:54:54 castle pppd[1721]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/cua1
Jan 30 12:54:54 castle pppd[1721]: sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <asyncmap 0x0>
<magic 0xea3646d9> <pcomp> <accomp>]
Jan 30 12:55:21 castle last message repeated 9 times
Jan 30 12:55:24 castle pppd[1721]: LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
Jan 30 12:55:40 castle pppd[1721]: Terminating on signal 2.

Here I terminated it after about a minute.

Since I have chat in the verbose mode, the /var/log/messages files contains:

My ISP is no help. So far he's told me to upgrade to newer software. Which I
did. I now have ppp-2.3.11 running under linux 2.2.14 and the results are
the same. Namely, timeout on LCP requests.

My questions are:
1. What am I doing wrong?
2. What questions can I ask my ISP to help resolve this problem?

Thanks for any and all help,
Dave
