This was the BEST idea put forth by anyone! I connected with minicom and got
gibberish - nothing like I had seen in other cases of working with ppp.
Recalling that I've had problems with the phone lines before, I dropped my
speed down to 19200(!) and tried again. Lo and behold, their system provided
a login text, but monitored for the ppp protocol. (If you try to login, they
just send a message saying you can't do that and they hang up.)

So, changing the options file to specify the lower rate, I tried again and
evrything went through as expected.

Right, sorry about that. You're right on both counts. I was just so
frustrated by the lack of support from my ISP that I 'lost it' for a bit.

By the way, I think you're understating yourself in your signature. You may
not be a guru by some definitions, but nobody can be a guru in all things.
