Well, I don't imagine that there will be much difference except for the
generality that external modems tend to be a bit quicker than the
equivalent internal counterpart by the same company.  What you generally
get is more features when you buy more expensive modems, and USR
Couriers have an excellent reputation.  I do, however, suggest using
something to reassign your systems IRQ priorities to give your serial
transfers precedence to minimize stalls due to the other hardware
hogging the CPU.  I have just such a utility called "irqtune."  If you
would like to have it, just e-mail me, and I will send it along.  Just
make sure that you read the README file so that you will know how to
install and configure it.
