I've got a PPP connection between two Linux boxes I admin. Each box is
using a USR Courier, so they're connecting at 33.6 (or sometimes slower).
All is working well... for a while. After an inconsistant amount of time
(sometimes 5 minutes, sometimes hours) after a PPP connection is
established, I begin experiencing 50% packet loss. Exactly 50%.
I get this type of output when I do a ping:
PING border-wichita.futureks.net (209.134.106.1): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 209.134.106.1: icmp_seq=0 ttl=253 time=449.2 ms
64 bytes from 209.134.106.1: icmp_seq=2 ttl=253 time=395.9 ms
64 bytes from 209.134.106.1: icmp_seq=4 ttl=253 time=335.4 ms
tcpdumps on either side of the connection are not entirely conclusive...
I see two ICMP echo requests go out, then I see one ICMP echo reply come in.
On the other side, I see one request for each reply. I'm not (as of yet)
sure if only half of the requests are being recieved, or if they're all
being received and replied to, but only half of the replies are being
received.
I'd test that right now, but it's not acting up yet... hasn't been for a few
hours. But it inevitably will soon enough.
One side of the connection is a 486DX4/100, 12mb RAM, kernel 2.2.14 and pppd
2.3.5. The other side is a P133, 8mb RAM, kernel 2.0.38 and pppd 2.3.5.
Any ideas of what's causing the problem? Or any ideas of what logs or
debugging output to generate or look for to track down the problem a bit
more?
Thanks!

Floppy disk tip #4: Never insert a diskette into the drive upside down. The
data can fall off the surface of the disk and jam the intricate mechanics of
the drive.
