pppd 2.3.7 and nomagic ?

I'm running 2.3.7 under Red Hat 6.1.  I see the nomagic parameter listed
in the manpage but when I try to use it,  this is written tosyslog:

Mar 17 06:32:33 scott pppd[11835]: unrecognized option 'nomagic'

What am I doing wrong?
