Generally speaking, no problem - we do it with remote samba shares.
The only issue is resolving the host name - and of course you can't find it by
browsing because its usually on another subnet (BTW its interesting how many
windows shares are visible on the met).
You will either have to use lmhosts on the local machine to get the name to IP
mapping, or use the IP address in the first instance to get at the sharing
host.
Once the ppp connection is up, then use the map drive (assuming its windows)
interface to locate the machine and drive (using either name or IP address as
above).
