Unfortunately, I've not gotten around to writing a section on the new drivers, but they ARE producing patches for the 2.2.x kernels for the smartRAID V and VI cards. All the ones that I've seen are i960 based, which is great for non RAID 5, and still pretty good for RAID 5. I've got the email of Deanna Bonds at Adaptec, who is writing/maintaining the drivers. > > I need a fast raid card. > > I looked at dpt(adaptec) but all their have 100mhz cpu's on > it (vs the > > 233mhz cpu on the Extremeraids) > > You're comparing a 233 StrongArm to a 100 i960. The StrongARM chips all have hardware xor instructions, whereas only 1 of the i960 chips have that. This makes StrongARM RAID 5 computations faster, but I don't have any xor benchmark information available to tell how much xor data each chip can push. Unless you're using bloody fast drives, I think either chip should keep up. The i960 on my card can certainly keep up with 3 UW 10MS SCA SCSI drives in a RAID 5. Drives are 9GB, iirc.
