This is highly dependent on how the bios works in your machine and 
also how it interprets the status of the missing drive. Some scsi 
controllers will automatically place the first available drive in the 
bios 0x80 slot, others will not -- also bios dependent. Assuming for 
a moment that the controller will do this, if the "dead" drive is 
still a valid scsi device then it won't happen anyway. Some bios's 
will allow you to designate an alternate device as the boot device -- 
not standardized.

Best bet is to have the boot diskette handy and always plan to swap a 
bad primary disk for the next in line. This requires that the second 
boot track be written as though it were positioned as the first 
device. i.e. the bios=0x80 line of the lilo.conf file. Then when 
there is a failure, you can boot from the diskette to go on the air 
ASAP and swap the secondary and primary drives for a semi-permanent 
fix until a new drive is installed.
