In that case, prepare to be surprised :-) Linux software raid does allow you
to build a degraded raid - it's proven to be quite handy for the
installation case outlined in the original mail; also being able to recreate
raid superblocks WITHOUT starting an automatic resync can be an asset if
something goes wrong with your raid configuration.
