This message is due to the fact that you didn't have the raid1 module
inserted - if you'd done 'cat /proc/mdstat' you'd have seen the raid1
personality wasn't registered. If you put 

alias md-personality-3 raid1

in your /etc/conf.modules, the raid1 module would autoload.

Upgrading to raidtools-0.90 really should have gone along with patching
your kernel. Did you do that? And did you check /var/log/messages after the
mkraid abort?

Hope some of this helps. I'm just a newbie at this stuff too.
