Did you start raid first?  See raidrun(8).  /proc/mdstat should indicate active
status before anything touches /dev/md0.

$ cat /proc/mdstat
Personalities : [1 linear] [2 raid0] [3 raid1]
read_ahead 8 sectors
md0 : active raid0 hde7 hdc7 6345600 blocks 16k chunks
md1 : inactive
md2 : inactive
md3 : inactive

$ rpm -qa | egrep 'raid|source'
raidtools-0.50beta10-2
kernel-source-2.0.36-3
