First start with some added information.
 - Distribution
 - kernel
 - raidtools used
 - kernel raid patch used
 - raidtab

Your mentions of "ckraid" leads me to believe you're using the older-style
0.4x raid instead of 0.90 (preferred)  It might be worth starting at:

The Introduction covers the issue fairly well, just ignore that
overly-optimistic phrase "...when the 2.4 kernel comes out (hopefully
around christmas 1999)..." :)
