I think you've got them mixed up.  It makes the most sense to be able to
boot from a RAID1 (mirror), next most to be able to boot from LINEAR, and
the least ammount of sense to be able to boot from a RAID0 or RAID5, because
of the dificulty of implementation.  RedHat6.1 allowed me to create bootable
mirrors on install, although there were a few things that they totally
screwed up (like locking you out of rebooting while the mirror "re"-built,
and NOT displaying ANYTHING on the screen).  But that's a implementation
issue, not one with being able to boot from RAID.  If you're running some
other distro, you need to be running RAID 0.90, and LILO with the redhat
patches.
