This should be normal.  Check /proc/mdstat.  It should show that it is
setting-up/reconstructing the drives and giving an estimated time for
completion.  Let it have enough time to complete before restarting the
system.  It can take an hour or so (for 10G on a regular [read: slow]
PC), maybe less.

You could do a 'mkfs -c ...'

That does a 'bad block' check.  That really is a bit pointless with a
raid, tho....(I think?)  You should get IDE errors logged if a drive
is dying or produces errors (I just experienced that
unfortunately...). 

If nothing else, make sure your raidtools matches the kernel patches
you use, and RTFM!  The package should come with a HOWTO which is
really quite good.
