the boot specification should be for the "real" device that you write 
the record to. This implies multiple lilo.conf files for each disk to 
which you wish to write an MBR. This also solves the problem of 
different geometries for disks within a raid array. See examples in 
the Boot+Root+Raid+lilo howto at the Linux Documentation Project.
