The probable reason is that your tape drive does not disconnect from the
SCSI bus when rewinding. This prevents disk I/O on the bus and the disk
times out. There are many possible reasons why the tape does not
disconnect:
- disconnects are disabled either in the SCSI adapter configuration or
the drive configuration
- bug in the SCSI adapter firmware (see Leonard's message)
- bug somewhere else?
- SCSI cables/termination (not probable in your case)
- ?
