The power supply is fine, the two IDE drives don't miss a thing. I did some
more playing around with the settings and came to the conclusion that I
can't run the drive at 20MB/sec. When I changed the Adaptec BIOS to allow a
maximum transfer rate of 10MB/sec, the Linux driver negotiated transfers at
5MB/sec. I've copied a few large directories containing thousands of files
and occupying over 2GB of disk space from an IDE drive to the SCSI drive
using these settings and not had any problems. With a 20MB/sec
configuration I always got a few timeouts/unexpected resets/unexpected bus
frees and a corrupt file system when doing the copy (using tar in a pipe).
The drive did actually seem to disconnect at those times, one could hear a
tick, as if the heads retracted and this was followed by the errors. The
tar would keep going but the file system would be corrupted.
I'll stick to the 5MB setting for now, but it would be nice to be able to
run at 20.
