The 50 pin connector on a U2W is on the SE only bus segment (aka, behind
the 3860 chip). It is entirely possible that the 3860 could have been

Active came about with SCSI-2 and was simply even more important when
Ultra started to appear. Devices capable of 10MByte/s narrow transfers
should use active termination, but if they have resistor packs for
termination, then it isn't active :)

They way you said this, it almost sounds like you had the FWD on the
Ultra2 card. That does *not* work, the U2W card only supports SE and
LVD devices, not older HVD devices. That could have been a problem as
well.
