The controller is probably not the culprit.

I meant 'position on the SCSI BUS'. For example, a 8 bit device using a
passive terminator might be twice bad for terminating a Wide SCSI BUS
for Ultra SCSI data tranfers, btw.

I haven't, but such adapters probably should not make problems if they are
good enough and correctly used.

Both are (ncr53c8xx and sym53c8xx), and can be selected independently
either as module or statically linked with the kernel.
