I normally compile source when I have the option. Like you, I've
experienced that it improves the probability of success ;-)
The problem I described is almost certainly unrelated to cdrecord, I
just threw that in there to show that the problem seems multifaceted.
The fact that you are running a similar configuration is interesting.
