I've just bought one of these drives and have also experienced
problems. In my case, I'm using Initio 9100W adapters, but the
machine simply locks (when booting Linux) at the bus scan/detection
stage. It does boot under win98.
>From a search, I found that the 1.0G firmware is aledged to fix
problems when connecting to a narrow port on a wide card (my
drive is 1.0f) - I've tried disabling wide negotiation on the
controller, but that doesn't help.

I did also find a report of problems with the drive set to
id 6 (!).
I haven't yet updated the firmware - I blew the machine's power
supply :(
I will also try changing the block size to see if that fixes
it (as suggested by Franklin Black).
