It might (the drive's error correction circuits do a read after write, and if
it couldn't reread the same block, it tries again). For my daily dumps, I try
to get into a habit of running the cleaning tape every Monday when I switch
tapes. I also keep track of how many times I use the cleaning tape, and go to
the next one after 50 or so times. Similarly for DAT tapes, I do a verify
after the dump, and if I get excessive differences or errors, I thow out the
tape.
