I will have the same problem in the near future, but I plan just to use
the second
serial port, connected via null-modem cable. So you send and get data
(communicate)
with another program on your computer instead of the micro
controller/processor
(what your program doesn't have to know). But the incoming data
(simulated
micro processor) don't have to be same  (no loopback) - it's a real
communication,
where you also can simulate errors.
