Hello,
I have compiled my kernel (2.2.16) with module support (including automatic loading of
modules
with kmod). But they dont seem to work. I have logged all the kernel messages and i
get messages
like these when the system tries to load modules
modprode : cant locate module ppp-compress
or
modprobe ; cant locate module soundxxx
These are examples. So it seems to me the system does call them but it does not find
them. But I have
seen that there are modules in /lib/module/2.2.16 so what could be the problem ?
Anyone have a hint ?

this IP address is static, i.e., fixed and constant and never changes
ever?

you don't give IP addresses to boxen, you give them to interfaces.
you want to figure out what IP address PPP connects with (assuming

you will want to set up your own mail server on linux. i recommend
qmail because it is 1) secure and 2) fairly easy. i recommend david
sill's excellent website
life with qmail
<URL:http://web.infoave.net/~dsill/lwq.html>

use fetchmail to gather mails from your ISP's POP3. the fetchmail
will inject them into your local mail server.
> 6.) My outgoing STMP from the ISP is "smtp.namezeo.com"
you can direct your SMTP client (i.e., outgoing mailer) to relay
through your ISP *or* you can ignore the ISP's mail server and deliver
directly.

I suspect my swap partition is not enabled. 'top' shows 0K for
the swap space, and 'swapon -s' shows no entries. 'swapon -a'
appears in /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit, but there is no entry in
/etc/fstab for my swap partition. Can someone tell me if there
should be an entry in /etc/fstab for my swap partition, and if
so, what should it look like?
Thanks,
Dick

Just run 'depmod -a' as root - this is usually done automatically
on startup, in some init script (depending on your distribution).
If it's missing in yours, report it as a bug.

The BIOS does see it. The problem is that some newer BIOSes use a call that
is undocumented to report the amount of RAM. Windows and some other systems
were given the information. Linux wasn't.
So it *is* Linux at fault, but it's not the fault of Linux, if you see what
I mean.

The manual in this case would be going to Deja and searching for info about
misdetected RAM with linux. You would have been deluged with posts about it,
as it must be the single most often asked question we see here.
Also upon subscribing, and at regular intervals, the group FAQs are posted.
This is another 'Manual' to read.
Or have a rummage through /usr/doc/.
Or go to LinuxDoc.org and search that. You have no excuse with Linux at
saying you don't have a Manual. We don't simply mean "The book that came
with your CDs".
If it's not obvious from these what to do, *then* you post here. Learning
how to problem-solve unix yourself is a very useful skill to learn. And I
readily admit it isn't obvious at first where to look, but now you know.

I installed APC PowerChute on my server. When I run Config.sh, it
eventually tells me the serial port must be set for modem control. I
run the stty command like this:
stty -F /dev/ttyS0 -clocal
Then run "stty -a -F /dev/ttyS0" and it reports -clocal. Running
Config.sh gives the same error and the port reverts to +clocal again.
The system is RH6.2 and the UPS is a Back-UPS 650 (simple signalling).
It's a server, so there is no X system - I have to configure by hand or
shell scripts. When I had NT on this same hardware, the UPS worked like
a champ.

You may need to activate mysql support for your php3 installation.
php3 comes with many many useful interface, by default, not all of them are

When you are in the directory, try "./filename"
./ is an abbreviation for the current directory

Thanks for the suggestion. I followed it and doing an ls -l shows the
right major and minor numbers, but I still get the same failure message
when I try to mount the partition.
/dev/hdb14 has wrong major or minor number
Any idea on what might be causing the problem?

I tried to install an Ethernet card, specifically the SMC EZNET-ISA
(10Mbps Ethernet ISA card). According to the Redhat site, it is supported
on Tier 2, but I can't get my system to recognize that it is even there. I
kept finding eth0 unknown, so I just went ahead and reinstalled Linux to
try to make it easy. The instalation also could not find the card. I am
wondering if I have to somehow turn off Plug-and-Play, but the disk that
was shipped with the card is DOS, and to be honest, I can't figure out how
to access a floppy in Linux. SMC tech-support was beyond unhelpful and
almost impossible to get any info out of.
