Are the permissions set to exec? If not, copy it to HDD, then
chmod 777 <file> then ./<file> .

Subject: TV card messes up other parts of screen
Date: Sun, 25 Jun 2000 03:01:30 +0100
I'm looking for help in narrowing down this problem. I have a Hauppage
model 498 TV card (a PCI card using the Bt878 chipset), and it works
fine but only as long as I don't try to use the computer for much else
at the same time :-(
The problem is that when other parts of the screen move (eg when
scrolling within a window unrelated to the TV card), the scrolled part
and other parts of the screen that are near it but outside its window
often get messed up, and when it happens it remains until I force a
refresh (eg by moving another window over the affected area and then
away again).
My video card is an ATI Rage 128 XPERT 2000 (16M) and I'm running RedHat
6.2 with XFree86 3.3.6. That combination has been a known problem area
because of the misplaced text bug, but I have installed the Suse driver
for the card, and certainly that has cured the text problem.
To drive the card, I'm using the bttv, tuner and msp3400 modules, with
xawtv as the application. Oh, and I'm running Gnome in case that's
relevant.
I'd be grateful for any ideas...

Vilmos,
What you have below works. My references are different. One did mention append
which I tried but it did not work either. The difference was the example did not
double quite the ether string. It looks like the examples which listed LILO: etc
was wrong and LILO: is not supposed to be there. ??
Thanks Vilmos.

I had a struggle getting that to work initially a few months ago on 6.1. I
did eventually get it to work by making the entry for it lower down in the
lilo.conf file. Presumably something else needed to load first. I too ran
lilo aftewards each time, but it still didn't take effect until the time when
the entry of that line was lower in the lilo.conf file.

Yes it is the BIOS. My board had the same problem but only with Linux and
OS/2 up until the time when a "fix" was put in the recent flash for my BIOS.
Now I have all 128MB of RAM available without the append in LILO.
Some non-Windows OS use the BIOS function Int15 [AX=E801] to get the
size of installed memory. In the recent past some authority sentenced
this function as 'not ACPI compliant' and made the BIOS manufacturers
to remove this function. WinXX is not affected by that change because
it uses BIOS function Int15 [EAX=0000E820] which was added later and which
is considered 'ACPI compliant'.
> BTW, what is the mem=128M thingy you mentioned?
You enter it in the lilo.conf file and run lilo. There are quite a lot of
messages explaining this that I've read here tonight...

Subject: "hdd: lost interrupt" during installation (Redhat 6.2)...
Date: Sat, 24 Jun 2000 23:15:41 -0400
Major newbie alert; please rest assured that I've hunted around to find
the answer, and I am truly sorry if this turns out to be in a FAQ
somewhere.
I am the proud receipient of a friends old Intel box that I'm trying to
install Redhat 6.2 on; this is my first Linux experience, and I'm truly
excited. However, as the install beings, the message console starts
reporting "hdd: lost interrupt" over and overa again, and I never get
beyond the third package. I am begining to understand that this may be
a driver related issue with my CD rom drive, and one posting I read
suggested buying a new controller or something, which seems a bit
extreme until I find out what I'm doing.
Is this a driver related issue? Can I force the installer to use a
better driver? Ok, here goes. HELP! Wow, I feel better now.
Seriously, thanks to any help anyone can provide; I'm happy to provide
detailed information about the drive, etc. However, as I'm a Mac guy,
this is a strange, new, but exciting world. Thanks very much.

Expect is a simple scripting language that could handle the job using
ssh. You tell it the command to execute ('ssh <hostname>') and what to
expect (ie "login" or "password"). Then tell it what to send when it
receives that prompt and so on. You can also specify timeout value so
that if the script does not get a prompt or string that it expects
with in the time you set, it will jump to the timeout clause.
Personally, I would do it with perl, although it would probably take
more scripting. With perl, you can use the 'open' command to open an
executable at a file descriptor. Then you can just print the commands
you want to send to the file descriptor. As for timeout in perl, often
what I will do is fork a child process that will send the commands and
then send a signal to the parent when it has completed. You can then
have the parent loop for whatever timeout value you want and if it
doesn't receive the signal by then, kill the child and continue. Check
out the Perl Cookbook for good examples and the Programming Perl book
for more details.

DSL is big topic, without more details. What have you tried? What type
of service (static, bridged, PPPoX)? What kind of modem? Any errors?
Some of the possibilities and specifics are explained:

Sirs,
First of all, I am a relative newbie to Linux. I'm trying to install Redhat
Linux 6.2 on my machine. It has an ATI Rage 128 GL AGP graphics card and a
CTX 17" monitor.
During the setup screen where I select the graphics card (I selected ATI
Rage 128 (generic)) and then hit 'Test this configuration'. The test screen
displays correctly, but when I'm brought back to Linux setup screen, the
display is very jumbled.
Any suggestions?
Many thanks,

Find out what group /dev/hdd and /dev/hdc are owned by and add yourself
to that group with usermod. Alternatively, change the perms with chmod
to rw_rw_rw_, however this is not as secure.

Perhaps your /etc/fstab file needs a bit of editing? This is the
file that determines what can be mounted with something simple
like 'mount /mnt/cdrom'. My line looks like this:
/dev/cdrom /cdrom iso9660 ro,user,unhide,noauto 0 0
I think the important part is 'user' option in the fourth
section. The other parts might be different than yours. If you
type 'man fstab', it will discuss formatting this file.
This might not work =( but I hope it does! Good luck.

I think all you need is to put gnome-session and your window manager in
the xstartup file. Possibly you will need to add panel as well. I did it
once but forget what exactly I did. I do remember that gnome was really slow
over vnc so I'm just running ICEwm.
