Hi,
I think you can get the supplied kernel to compile if you select the SMP
support.
Another fix is to upgrade the kernel to 2.2.17 although this dosen't
want to support USB - IIRC it needs a patch. To prevent a boot up whinge
you need to remove the alias to the usb controller. I didn't need USB so
I can cope without it.
The mirror sites are carrying rpm upgrades to RH7.0 and are probably
worth tracking. I download them by using lftp which is a scriptable ftp
client which can mirror remote sites locally (including directory
recursion ;-)). Then I use gnorpm to upgrade the system. Alternatively
try the Rufus site (http://rufus.w3.org/linux/RPM/).

I am about to have ADSL installed via HomeChoice ( UK ISP ). They will
be connecting their service to my PC via the COM ports. Does anyone have
any experience of setting this up for Linux ( SuSE 7.0 ). Of course the
system will come with some lovely CD's for Windoze, and SuSE can't give
any advice for this kind of connection, although they recommend looking
at PPPoE, which I presume wont work on a serial port.

I tried it but it didn't work, the error is:
tar: /dev/st0: cnnot open: not such device
my be I have to load the driver for the SCSI Controller first.
you can point to the right man page for that.
System is running on three IDE harddisks (and was installed on that without

SCSI was inserted into the system with the new streamer.
SCSI controller is TEKRAM DC-390 U2W.

I am on a Sharp Intel 486, and his response to the logs included:

RE-450 seems to not use the I/O 300.
"Oct 29 22:08:16 vtech kernel: pcnet_cs: unable to read hardware net

I never encounter the similar problem. According to my test, our
RE-450 can work fine with DELL Latitude CPi and IBM ThinkPad 600x

I doubt the problem is probably caused by the resource conflict.
Can you try to disable some peripheral devices?

I suppose you have set up multiple entries in your lilo.conf. You need a
timeout entry to have a choice. Remember it is in tenth of a second units,
so to have 10 seconds time you need
timeout =100

Hi Victor,
not sure what your problem is but I suspect Red Hat is doing something
dumb (Spot the inate prejudice of a SuSE user). I'm assuming
that /dev/zip is a symbolic link, do you know what it points to?
IIRC zip drives are emulated scsi devices so it should be /dev/sda if
you have no other scsi devices (although it'll be /dev/sda2 if its some
flavour of windows disk, don't ask why). This should allow you to mount
it by hand so at least you'll know you can get to it.
The low-tech solution is probably to load the zip driver by hand or put
it in boot.local along with the relevant entry in fstab to mount. This
doesn't complain to much if there is now disk or indeed (in the case of
external drives)you forget to switch the drive on.
The only other thing I can think of is that you haven't got scsi
emulation enabled in the kernel (you'll need to recomplile your kernel).
Sorry if this is no help whatsoever but its all I can think of off the
top of my head at a windows machine with no linux documentaion. You can
always try the Zip-Drive-HOWTO at www.linuxdocs.org (which helped me
get my drive working)

The kernel they supplied compiles just fine. I know because
I have recompiled it. The question is were you using kgcc
to compile it or gcc?

This info is from the book "Running Linux", by O'Reilly (3rd Ed.):
"...IBM PS/1, ThinkPad, and ValuePoint machines do not store drive geometry
in the CMOS, so you must specify at boot time." You then need to boot the
computer using the " floppy=thinkpad " parameter at the LILO boot:
prompt.
"With distributions that do not show the [boot:] prompt by default, you
need to hold down the SHIFT, or CTRL key, or press the Scroll Lock key
while booting the floppy or cd-rom if you want to enter something at the
boot prompt."
So, you should see:
boot:
at which point you would type:
boot: linux floppy=thinkpad
or
boot: linux floppy = thinkpad (the book isn't really clear)
Hope that helps.

mention which distro you were using): if you use a Slackware bootdisk, at
the first boot argument you could enter the argument "mount
root=/dev/hdXX" (where XX is replaced with the location of your Linux
partition); or if you rawrite a standard YAST bootdisk for Suse, booting
an already-installed system is one of the options in the YAST installer
menu. And so on.
Once you have your own Linux installation booted, then edit /etc/lilo.conf
and run "lilo" as root to implement the changes.
