depends on several things, ie. are you using Linux to connect to a
server, using Linux to connect to a Linux box serving something, using
some other os to connect to a Linux box...you get the picture.

you might try something like this:

-use your brouwser and go to http://the.server or ftp://the.server
-open a telnet session to the server

if you're using a micro$oft product see if you can find the server in
"network neighborhood" or do start>run> \\the.server\ to see if samba is
active and you have access.

it could be that the server is configured to perform a special task like
DNS or proxy or time, news whatever. in that case you'll probably have
to ask (nicely) before you'll be allowed into the server

good luck!

it is possible that you have a perfectly good compiler already installed
in your new linux box you were talking about. check, or ask the (tech)
person who installed the box. if it isn't there you could install if
from the distro that was used to setup the Linux box. if all else fails
try this: http://www.gnu.org/software/gcc/gcc.html it worked for me.

Subject: Can Linux Read/Write to NTFS?????

Hi all,

I have a Dell Insperion 7500 notebook and for work I must use Windows NT
(yea I know so please don't give me any grief) and my hard drive and my
data are on NTFS partition. I have RH6.2 installed on another
partition and would like to access my windows data from linux. When I
first started investigating linux everyone told me linux could
read/write to ntfs. Now I am just confused?? The man pages for mount
note ntfs for the -t switch yet it gives me errors and a lot of how-to's
say it cannot be done.

So what is the final word???

All linux distros I know already include both a c and c++ compiler.
Either gcc (gcpp) or egcs. Maybe you forgot to install it (

There are to right there next to each other at "CONFIG_DEC_ELCP" one is
the old on the other is a newer version. You will need to read the
"HELP" file to see which your system needs. The CONFIG_DEC_ELCP is the
module I have to use for a linksys 10/100 card or it won't work.

The EISA one has something to do with the PCI and something else, I
don't remember the wording so you may want to read the HELP file on it
also.

Read the HELP files in "network devices". If there isn't a specific
choice for the kingston 10/100 you may need to use one of the other
modules like I mentioned above.

Also when starting the network use:
        /etc/rc.d/init.d/network start
or /etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart

Yong,

You didn't mention if you were attempting to telnet to your linux box as
"root". Telnetting in as root is disabled by default in Linux, and not
recommended. If you need to telnet as root, it is suggested you log in
as a normal user, then use the su command to become root.
Hope this helps.

yeah.

It's just a problem that apparently some people have found problems with it
wanting to goof up writing to NTFS..... although I don't happen to know what
kernel they were trying to use or anything. Perhaps by now the distros have
remedied this problem.

First, check the file /etc/inetd.conf to see if there are uncommented
lines for the services you wish to be offered (apart from being sure
that inetd is up and running).
Next you should verify that there are no restrictions to connect based
on source addresses or login name of the users, as defined in the
tcp_wrappers. Look at the files /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny: no
matter what the latter says, the former should have the following lines
, just in case:
/etc/hosts.allow
in.telnetd: IP_source_address
in-ftdp: IP_source_address

The names before the colon must be those at the end of the corresponding
line in /etc/inetd.conf.

There is still another possible (though unlikely in your case) reason: a
firewall in the destination machine that is blocking the packets for
these services.

Date: Thu, 29 Jun 2000 23:45:43 GMT

I just set up an AMD Athlon 750 MHz system, with a 20 GB Ultra DMA IDE
hard drive, 384 MB RAM, 8 MB AGP video card (not sure of exact model),
and a motherboard running AMI bios with Gateway's CMOS sitting on top of
it. For those that are familiar with them and know the hardware shipped
with them, this is a Gateway select computer.

I've installed Win2000 Professional on the primary partition, which is
approximately 6.0 GB. I then installed Red Hat Linux 6.2, making sure
to keep the boot partition within the first 1023 cylinders.
Installation went great! Then, when attempting to boot the linux
configuration for the first time, I get a kernel panic, and the boot
process hangs, permantently. I tried booting from the floopy and got
exactly the same problem. This appears to be a problem with the kernel
(2.2.14-5.0), and it's hardware drivers.

I'll try to list some of the boot messages in more detail, but keep in
mind that this is a screaming machine, and once the kernel's been
unpacked, everything scrolls by so fast, I can't get all of the
messages.

Hi. Whenever I try to boot up my box from a floppy, all I get is "Error
0x04" and it won't do anything else, even if I type in "rescue".
Here is my setup:
I'm using Linux Redhat 6.0 on a Pentium II 466.
I've got a 15gb and a 17gb hard drive. My linux partition is on my second
hard drive (hdb1) and I'm using 3gb. My swap space is 500mb.
I'm using a floppy to boot into linux because lilo always overwrites the
windows partition and so I can't boot into windows.
If you have any suggestions on how to boot into linux, I would be very
grateful.

Make sure you do not run getty on /dev/cuab. Run getty on /dev/ttyS1.
If you do not shorten ready lines on the connector, program getty
to activate "clocal" mode. It's getty specific, so refer to your
manual. I use agetty with -L flag:

S0:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -L ttyS0 9600 vt100

Subject: Need Rescue/LILO Help

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RedHat Gurus:

I have attempted to install RedHat Linux 6.1 on a SCSI hard drive. It
took several trys to get it to
work mostly because first it had difficulties with my CDROM, then it had
difficulties
with the non-standard address for my NIC. Finally, after all worked, I
found that LILO
seemed to be corrupt, so I deleted it using the DOS function fdisk /mbr.

Now I need to reinstall LILO so that I can boot my LINUX which is on a
SCSI disk at /dev/sda3
(/, /boot, /usr, and everything). This is the 3rd partition of a SCSI
disk with the first
partition being my windows and the second being the linux swap. I have
tried the trick
that I have seen for IDE disks of booting from the installation "boot:"
prompt by typing
vmlinuz root=/dev/sda3. However this results in a Kernal Panic error (I
assume due
to the fact that this is a SCSI disk). I have also escaped to the mini
bash shell (which
is available after I enter all my SCSI info etc) and been able to mount
the /dev/sda3
and view all the files, but you cannot run lilo because it expects
things to be in the /
directory not some other mount directory. I tried using ROOT=/root (my
mount point for
the real /), but that did not work either. Do I have to redo the whole
RedHat installation again
or is there a simple way to install LILO, or create a rescue floppy that
allows me to boot
the existing installation?

Thanks for all the help.

I found that you had to tell linux the ISA cards address by adding the line
options eth0 io=0x300 under the alias command.
