But does Bootpart work (reliably!) if you have no FAT or FAT32
partition, only an NFTS partition for Windows 2000?

Something I've read in print or on-line says that the trouble with
replacing LILO on the MBR, in place of the Windows NT Loader (with an
NFTS partition for Windows 2000, say) is that some anti-virus programs
will detect this as a possible virus.

Does anybody know if VPN support is built into RH 7.0? I am trying to
use RH 7.0 as a router/firewall. But I am unable to use my VPN client
and also Exceed (X windows emulator ). I have read thru so many sites,
but they talk about rebuilding the kernel with VPN options. Is there a
way to do VPN with RH 7 without rebuilding the kernel?
Are there any GUI clients or step by step instructions for not so expert
linux users like me to easily configure the firewall?
Thanks

Well, I feel I sort of have to admit my blunders (not checking BIOS)
for not checking the basic stuff first... :)
Soundcard was recognized without a hitch after proper values were
higlighted in BIOS. Great!!!
Now for the bad news: using sndconfig, MIDI does not work.
My boot-up messages when re-booting linux say that the MIDI module is
an opl3 (Yamaha)
Any hints from electronic musicians??

What kernel source package did you use ?
reiserfs is only part of the patched 2.2.14.SuSE source ( from the
package lx_suse IIRC) but it isn't in the original kernel source.

In REdhat 6.1, I get the following error:
An error occured reading the partition table for the block

Can this be fixed? Does this mean that the drive is no good?

That depends on your options, wrt/the application. If trying to print
Postscript using ghostscript as a print filter under APS or
MagicFilter, then probably most (all) of the LaserJet drivers will
work, some with more options than others. If using StarOffice and the
like, start with the HPL non-Postscript drivers, and see which one
works better.

Subject: HDD setup - UDMA or PIO?
Date: 14 Nov 2000 20:16:01 GMT
Hi,
I've noticed that Linux (at least RedHat 6.2) sets HDD access mode
to PIO (although it reports BIOS settings as DMA at boot time).
'hdparm' man page says that manual changing to (U)DMA is seldomly
necessary as PIO mode is usually most effective. This does not seem
to be true. In PIO mode I'm getting about 3.5 MB/sec read transfer
rate on a regular basis. After changing to udma*2 or udma*4,
it goes up to 15-25 MB/sec depending on the mode, disk model etc.
Still, on some machines (I've experimented with 5-6 PCs of different
configuration of MoBo, disk, CPU) this UDMA mode seems to be unstable
and is soon disabled by system after reporting some disk-related
errors. Or, if I have less luck, the machine hangs. I'm not 100% sure
but this might be related to the use of SoundBlaster sound card which
also uses DMA.
Several questions arise:
- should the UDMA mode be switched on, especially on newer machines?
- if yes, can it be done somehow at the very beginning of boot
procedure, or rather at the end, in /etc/rc.d/rc.local?
- is it safe?
- if it may conflict with other DMA-devices (like sound card), can it
be setup so the conflict does not occur?
- I've read reports on problems with UDMA/66 (some time ago). Still,
on some machines I've succeded in setting udma*4 mode (IMHO this
is UDMA-66) and it has worked. Does it mean that the problem
has already been fixed?
any hints/pointers would be appreciated,
regards, Michal.

If you are trying to masquerade your local network out over the
internet and want to use a VPN client on your local network thru the
linux machine, you will need to re-compile your kernel. I am not sure
about redhat 7, but do a uname -a and if the kernel is still 2.2.17 or
lower, you will need to patch it and recompile. It's a pain, but it's
nice once you have it setup.

Subject: fdisk and IDE-drives with more than 30 GB capacity?
Date: Tue, 14 Nov 2000 21:24:39 +0100
Hello out there!
I have got problems partitioning an IDE-drive with more than 30 GB capacity.
Can you tell me where to find documentation on that problem?
Heres the whole story:
I tried to install Linux on my new harddisk drive. Its a Maxtor drive, model 94610U6
with about 46 GB capacity.
My BIOS isnt able to use diskdrives with more than 8 GB of capacity, thats why I use
the "clipping" option.
When I start fdisk it tells me my drive has about 30 GB of capacity.
Im using a SuSE 6.4 distribution, with a 2.2.14 kernel and a fdisk
version v.2.10f.
The maiboard seems to be model MB-586VXU1, made by "ability".
But I havent found a BIOS-Update yet.
Id like to use the whole capacity of my drive as a bootdrive in that
computer.
Can you tell me what I have to do, or where I can find further
documentation concerning this matter?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Forgive me for jumping on this thread but I have a similar problem with a
Hayes ISA bus modem which is on /dev/ttyS2 or COM3....It too takes ages to
respond to commands and pppd/chat times out before the ISP connection
finishes. Took me a while to realise what was happening til I tried cat <
/dev/ttyS2 in one term and cat > /devttyS2 in another...the out window takes
ages to reflect what goes in the in one!
I'm running mandrake with kernel 2.2.15. Is this a known problem with bus
modems we have here?

Given such a level response in view of my rather flippant one, I retract the
flippant portion, with the appropriate humility, and regrets.
Never-the-less, the kernel has an even number assignment and unless the
developers have broken with the long established traditions, we mere users
may expect it to be stable, if not a 'stable release'.
Personally, I have a long standing habit of remaining with a kernel version
for quite some time after newer versions are out. This is a lesson I picked
up - rather slowly - after I got sick of breaking things just so I could run
the latest and 'greatest' kernel release.
Soon I will upgrade to one that supports iptables... not just yet.
Again, I regret the acrid response. Mea culpa maxima.

For this usage Bootpart does only write a 512 byte file and edit
boot.ini using standard file system calls. It then does not matter if
the NT boot partition is FAT or NTFS.
I however of cause cannot guarantee that Bootpart is reliable. Also
Bootpart boot sectors might not be able to load the boot sector of
partitions after cylinder 1023.
