Hi all,

Can someone please help this Linux newbie set the path for root. I've
read that I can do it by adding directory names to the PATH line in the
login name's .profile file. The proble is I can't find this file for
root.

Someone please help.

Thank you,

George

Read the f___ manual at /usr/doc/pam-0.72/txts/pam.txt

the pam module for kppp and pppd are located at
/etc/pam.d/kppp & /etc/pam.d/pppd

For example change /etc/pam.d/kppp

#%PAM-1.0
auth sufficient /lib/security/pam_rootok.so
# comment this line for password
#auth required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so
# add this line
auth required /lib/secuirity/pam_permit.so
session optional /lib/security/pam_xauth.so
account required /lib/security/pam_permit.so

After downloading, did you extract Netscape from the gzip tarball?
# tar xzvf gzip_tarball_netscape
# cd netscape_directory
# ./netscape_install_files
During the installation, where you put Netscape?
default is /opt/netscape
Start up netscape where you put it.
$ cd /opt/netscape
$ ./netscape
Hopefully it can run.
If it does you have to change properties of menu of netscape to run (i.e.
/opt/netscape/netscape).

How do you start gnome without being in a virtual desktop? When gnome
starts, everything is so big as to be unusable. I looked at my xf86config
file, and the virtual line seems to be commented out. I would like to use a
resolution of 1024 x 768, and am using the svga driver. rob

I have the same " invisible CDROM" problem when I install Debian.
I think it is not relating to the hardware. It is relating to the aged BIOS.
Maybe the BIOS need to be upgraded such that the CDROM can be detected at boot
time.

How do you think? You get any answer?

I have to test this

This is the code to the "honer system" virus for linux the most
prevolent virii on linux

please randomly rm -f 12 random files and forward this virus to another
person

but seriously there are the potential for virii on linux
but to do any real harm you would have to be running as root because
some one could slip something like "rm -fr /" in a script that you
get from some where and it would defanitly ruin your day if you were
running as root

thus you should only operate as root only as necessary

but do to the nature of the unix file systems and permisions it makes
it extramly unlikely that virii will ever become as prevolint on *nix
as the are on windows

that is the short and sweet of virii on *nix boxes
i will leave it to the phd's to explain the rest

For RH6.2
$ cd $HOME
$ vi .bash_profile

edit the path statement to add some more binaries to the path statement.

export PATH=/usr/local/some_directory/bin:$PATH

Here are the circumstances of the error message mentioned in the header:

1. The error happens when my system is starting up and is in Level 3.

2. After bringing up the Ethernet card interface, the system says:

Starting portmapper
Starting NFS file locking servies
Starting NFS lockd
locked svr input/output error

And then the system pauses for around a minute and a half or so before
resuming.

In very plain English--I'm new to Linux--what's the cause of the
problem? And what's the solution? Also, what are the risks?

I'm using Linux 6.2.

There is a mini HOWTO called mini/Large-Disk. It will explain all
this at great detail.

These HOWTO's is delivered with redhat systems and most likely other

Just had this problem compiling the latest gimp, with glib and gtk all from
source.

glibconfig.h was the only dependency it fell down upon (on two separate
machines). It may not be the right thing to do but I just 'cp'ed
/usr/local/lib/glib/include/glibconfig.h to /usr/local/include

It call compiled fine then. Kludge, yeah, but it worked ;).

If you've never run out of swap space in your 32MB RAM/64MB swap
setup you probably won't need more after upping the memory. I
have 128MB RAM here and I've never seen swap usage go over about
8MB, even with Netscape and StarOffice running at the same time.
But then I don't use KDE either...

First of all, it's not a "linux 1024 cylinder limit," it's a BIOS
1024 cylinder limit and affects all Intel-type hardware. All
Intel-type CPU's have to boot in real-mode and use the INT13
services to access the HD. This is the cause of the
1024-cylinder limit. Once booted, linux and other 32-bit
operating systems can switch the processor into protected -mode
and load 32-bit protected mode device drivers to access the HD
with out this 1024-cylinder limit, but first the OS has to be
able to boot before it can load the drivers. There are various
work-arounds that allow HD's to boot from areas above the
1024-cylinder limit, but some of them are software that either
gets wiped or doesn't work with linux.

The only part of linux that is affected by this 1024-cylinder
limit is the kernel, so as long as your linux kernel is in a
partition below the 1024-cylinder limit, it will be able to boot
and put the processor into protected mode as described above.

UMSDOS. It uses a different kind of file system (not the
standard efs2). Basically it puts the whole linux system into
a jumbo DOS file, and uses that as the file system. Is started
via LOADLIN I think, but never tried it, so not sure. And it
is indeed not as efficient as the real thing.

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Repost: Can't install Mandrake 6.0, problems about partition table?
Date: Sun, 02 Jul 2000 09:39:35 GMT

I have two hard disks and I had Mandrake on hdb (Seagate ST38641A, 8.6?
GB,1046 cyl.). The rest of that disk had been assigned to Win/DOS
partitions and hda had been (and is) whole Windows. It worked fine for
few months, but then it begun - troubles (various troubles) with
partition table, I've lost several times all partitions on that disk,
then I've lost access to the disk and finally both my hard disks
failed, BIOS wasn't able to find them, so(since all tests reported both
disks, and particularly the Seagate, as good)I've changed mother-board
and controller (as well as processor, now I have an AMD K6 II/333).
But, something still seems to be wrong about the Seagate disk - a disk
utility says (even after being formated at low level): 'calculated
CHS:16676x16x63; detected CHS: 16383x16x63' In fact, according to the
manufacturers on-line documentation, it should be 16383x16x63. BIOS
autodetection reported it as 16676(etc), so I've chosen USER mode to
set it as 16383x16x63. And only after doing that I was able to use
Partition Magic to make partitions, otherwise it reported incorrect
Partition Table. On that disk I've made three primary partitions (two
Ext2 and Linux SWAP) and an extended partition as the last one (inside
it I have several Linux logical partitions in the first half, then two
FAT32 and finally few FAT partitions; neither Win95 nor Win98 had
problems with those DOS partitions... till now, at least)I am trying to
install Linux from one of those FAT partitions at hdb, as I always did
(due to another problem, I'm not able to install it from CD-Rom). But,
when I boot from installation floppy and chose 'hard drive' as location
of the directories Mandrake/Base and Mandrake/RPMS, it offers me only
hda partitions! Although at the previous step, during the image load,
all partitions are listed among devices, both hda x and hdb x. Then I
tried to run the installation from hard disk, using loadlin <img> etc.
The same thing! Although loadlin, images and everything were placed
just in the partition that couldn't be found! Finally, I gave up and
moved the installation directories to hda and I was able to start the
installation process. But, when it came to DiskDruid/fdisk choice, none
of them was able to read the partition table of hdb; Disk Druid
reports: 'An error occured reading the partition table for the block
device hdb. The error was: no free resources' (in fact, I don't need
these utilities at all, since I already have Linux partitions,
created by Partition Magic, I only need to mount them as '/', 'USR'
etc., but I don't see a way to jump over them, the choice
is 'DiskDruid/fdisk/back'; and it was supposed to be 'expert' mode). I
tried to delete the hdb1 (that should be '/') and 'LINUX SWAP' in
Partition Magic, to make space and to re-create them using Partition
Magic, but nothing changed - no free resources. At the end, I've tried
to 'upgrade' instead to choose 'install', just to see what would
happen. And... it didn't say 'there is no Linux installed' or something
similar, it said - there're no Linux partitions!!! Does anybody
understand what's going on and does anybody can suggest me some work-
around, how to install Mandrake in *existing* Linux partitions? I would
appreciate very much any response, thanks in advance. (Note that I've
already had Mandrake on that disk, before I've changed the mother-
board.)

Date: Sun, 02 Jul 2000 12:00:04 +0200

I've posted this on other newsgroups before, but nobody seems to be able
to answer my question so I'll try in this newsgroup too...

Hardware: Celeron500, 128 Mb Samsung 15.3Gb UDMA mode4 HDD, SiS5513 IDE
          controller.
Kernel : 2.2.16, patched with ide-2.2.16.20000630
BIOS : Detects the harddisk as PIO4 and UDMA4
hdparm : 3.9-1, params: -d1 -m16 -c1 -A1 (even tried -X66)
(for some reason, after installing 3.9-1 my hdparm
          manpages were gone)

Enabled SiS5513 support in the kernel, including CONFIG_IDEDMA_AUTO
(yes, and even recompiled and installed the new kernel :) ).

hdparm -t /dev/hda gives me on average 8Mb/s (slow!)
hdparm -T /dev/hda gives me on average 17Mb/s (waaaaaaay to slow!)

I've tried all I can think off (like idebus=66, ide0=0x1f0, hdparm
-X68), but it won't go any faster and stays in UDMA mode 2...

Anyone has any ideas?

It is a "UMSDOS only" distribution. Pretty small as well. But
