Take a look at your partitions in Linux fdisk and see if any of them are
not Linux or Linux swap. You might also see if the partition order is
jumbled (not in consecutive order).
Windows recognizes additions, but is not too bright about drive or
partition removal. Maybe all you have to do is remove all the disk
related devices in Windows and reboot so it can put its house in order
again. Or it could be that BIOS creates a phantom drive because your
drives are out of sequence (what is on hdb?).

Could it be that /dev/cdrom is linked to wrong /dev/hdX (IDE) or /dev/sdX
(SCSI)?
Put in an CDROM and as root try to mount it. (My CDROM is IDE secondary
master, /dev/hdc)
# mount /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom
If this solves your problem,
relink your cdrom
# mv /dev/cdrom /dev/cdrom.orig
# ln -s /dev/hdc /dev/cdrom

Date: 3 Jul 2000 18:21:37 GMT
Well, I installed RH 6.2 yesterday. I was mostly very impressed --
a real GUI install this time! Wow. Also, it looks like NFS server
might be working again (it broke in 6.0). I'm dreaming that SCSI
tape might be working too, but I think it's just a dream.
Here are the things that are driving me nuts:
* Vim no longer supports digraphs. WTF is with that?
Now I have to find the source code and compile it myself.
* Xterm now draws bold text in white instead of in the
text foreground color. That makes bold text unreadable
on my black-on-white windows. I was able to work around
the problem by adding
-xrm '*VT100.colorBD: black'
to the xterm command line, but I shouldn't have had to do
that.
* Xterm changed the default backarrowKey resource to False.
Meant I couldn't enter backspace until I figured out how to
fix it.
* Underlined text now drawn in hard-to-read colors intead
of underlined. I can turn the color off by setting
VT100.colorULMode to false, but I can't turn the underlining
back on.
I'm sure I'll find more problems as I go, but these are the ones that
started driving me nuts right away.

That is something pine started doing in 4.x versions to store IMAP info.
But it does cause a problem for the old mail checkers which just check if
the folder is empty.
If you do not use IMAP press S, C in pine and check
quell-folder-internal-msg (press ? when on it to read help info).
Then make sure that mail folder is empty (except for the dummy msg) and:
cp /dev/null /var/spool/mail/username

Did you install minicom during the installation?
$ which minicom
/usr/bin/minicom
or

If not, go to your distribution linux CD and install it.

Hello all,
I'm wiring my house for a 3 node Ethernet network. I have a router and
the network running fine with the wire on the floor right now. The
thought occurred to me: is it possible for me to splice into a single
wire and thus not have to have a router? Coax does this right now,
right? This is a short distance network, < 50 ft. I was thinking that I
could have a splice at the wall plate and continue it onto the next wall
plate. Shouldn't this work? It works with cross-over cable on a two node
network. If this doesn't work, then why not? Curious minds want to know.

I can't use Xconfigurator because I used a vedio card driver which is
not provided by redhat. Every time I start Xconfigurator the redhat will
try to change the vedio card config to the one that doesn't work.
But how to change the resolution, say from 1024x768 to 640x480, without
using Xconfiguartor then? Thanks

Um. Do you have telnet? The last RH6.2 installation I saw didn't install
(maybe didn't even come with) telnet or an ftp program. I had to download
telnet and ftp. You can use gnorpm and the "web find" command to do that.

My RedHat does a bit weird:
1: Sometimes it doesn't allow me to write a database in the /var/lib/mysql
dir, whereas df says it has enough space left ? I can't found the solution
and after booting it works again (nothing appears in the log).
2: Now I have the problem that the console doesn't come up normaly, that is
the keyboard doesn't react and the screen flashes. But I am able to work on
it, by a telnet and X session. It now does the same thing after I booted
him.
How can I see in which runlevel it is in, as I needed to start the smbd
manual ??
Does anyone has an idea what isn't working properly ?

Nevertheless, you don't need xfs if you are the only user. But - there's
always some little "but" ...
Your /etc/X11/XF86Config file contains some little line :
FontPath unix/:-1
This means in short " go to font server for any fonts"
Just comment out/remove this line and put the paths to the font
directories into the /etc/X11/XF86Config - and remove the xfs with no worry.
Example :
Instead of
FontPath unix/:-1
this would be
FontPath my_font_directory1
FontPath my_font_directory2
FontPath you_name_it.

Any RedHat mirror that carries the rawhide/ directory will have a
single file like XFree86-4.0-19.src.rpm in the SRPMS directory. You
can build the RPM like this:
rpm --rebuild XFree86-4.0-19.src.rpm
and then install all the XFree86 binaries that are created in
/usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386 (or whatever arch you're using).

Can you tell us more about what you have done? Did you try
rebooting?
Have you tried the different /bin/mount options?
It is probably in Read-Only because the system wants you to do a
file system check, the standard operating procedure for an
incomplete shutdown. This can be done with /sbin/fsck.
