FYI, I have a Linksys LNE100TX card, and until this morning was
having the same difficulty. I read Don Becker's page on tulip,
downloaded the src.rpm, built it, installed it, and the card was
recognized. give it a try...

Have you tried using fdisk from your Windows startup disk?
It should still show your first primary partition as Fat16 or Fat32 if it is
still intact. Then check to make sure it is marked active. If all is well,
just escape out of fdisk and run the "sys" command to transfer the system
files to the Windows partition. Now you should be able to reboot to
windows.
To get back your multiple boot with lilo, boot with your linux rescue disk,
and install lilo on the mbr of the first hardisk. Make sure you add an
entry for other vfat /dev/hda1 with a label of Windows or whatever.
If the Windows partition is still intact, it needs to be correctly
identified in /etc/fstab, and when mounted in /etc/mtab.
Good luck.

Uhhh... `shutdown -h now' shuts down the _machine_, not the X server.
Try <Ctrl>-<Alt>-<Backspace> to shut down the X server, a.k.a. "X",
promptly. I have no idea why your exit menu does not kick you back
into text mode, but you shouldn't have to reboot to shut down X!
If your X screen still hangs you should probably still be able to
get to text mode with <Ctrl>-<Alt>-<F1-6>. I don't see how recompiling
is going to help and it sounds like you've been manually shutting
down your machine, a hard reset. Don't _do_ that! Use `shutdown'.

Subject: HELP: kernel building / modular kernels
Date: Tue, 04 Jul 2000 04:46:52 +0100

Hello. I'm having a truly wretched time trying to build a kernel.
Details: stock RH6.2, running kernel 2.2.14-5.0smp kernel, on a dual-
processor machine, attempting to build a new kernel with the I2C patch
applied (the aim of all this is
to get the latest version of the BTTV driver working). I configure
with make xconfig, make dep, make bzImage, copy aside the current
modules directory (/lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0smp), then do make modules
and make modules_install, then copy bzImage to /boot/vmlinuz-james,
add it to lilo.conf, run lilo.

The result boots. However, any attempt to load one of the shiny newly
compiled modules produces a flurry of undefined symbol errors (for
things like kfree).

modprobe -V says 2.3.10-pre1. Is this version buggy?

Does anybody have any idea what's going on here? As far as I can tell,
I'm doing exactly what the fabulous documentation says I should, and it
just isn't working at all. I'd be very grateful for any suggestions.

Hello there.
regarding Debian installation on Toshiba's T1910CS laptop,
Dr. Simmons wrote the following in April.
I would like to ask you for a few more details, please.

* which is the "start-up disk image" that will work?
(resc1400.bin ? lowmem.bin ?).
*Before dd copying the file to the hard disk partition,
does one need to mkfs.ext2 the partition?
* Will the following procedure for making the floppy do the trick, or am I
missing something?

(on a working Linux box)
fdformat /dev/fd0H1440
dd if=/usr/local/resc1440.bin of=/dev/fd0 bs=512 conv=sync ; sync

* when copying the image to the hard disk partition, I tried
dd if=/dev/fd0 of=/dev/hda1

and

dd if=/dev/fd0 of=/mnt (after mounting the partition and ext2).

So far, I haven't gotten any recipe that will work.

Appreciate any tips.

Thanks!

Tony Laszlo

Find a single-disk distribution that will boot. I used Pocket Linux.
Create a small 1.5 MB partition at the front of your hard disk. Make
it bootable and copy (dd) the debian start-up disk image to it. Then
   reboot and proceed as usual.

I responded by email to someone about this a couple months ago .
There I wrote everything down step-by-step. I have not found a copy
of that email yet. Let me know if you try this and run into problems.

You need to recompile your kernel to add scsi emulation support and SCSI
support for CD drives. Cdrecord will then treat your CD as a scsi CD
device. Without that emulation, cdrecord will never see it. Read the
notes on the kernel compile carefully because you may have to remove the
ATAPI/ide CD support to keep from interferring with the SCSI emulation.
(No problem if that is the case other than your CD will now be known as
/dev/srX instead of /dev/hdX to all of the other applications you use).

Greetings!

I have a Sony VAIO notebook (Z505HE) w/ SuSE 6.4 & Win98 (dual-boot via
LILO). I'm trying to get the Memory Stick (FLASH) device working under
Linux. It's a PCI device and from what little info I've been able to
scrounge so far, I'm under the impression that it should be recognized
during the PCI scan as "hdc1". The device works fine under Win98. Does
anyone have any ideas? Is there a PCI "scan" utility that I might be
able to use to look for hardware that the kernel doesn't find?

Thanks in advance,

Subject: Apache allow subdirectories? and how save *.zip?
Date: Tue, 04 Jul 2000 05:11:13 GMT

Hi,

I installed linux mandrake 7.1 and it nicely set up a working
Apache-Extranet server 1.3.12
I just changed a couple of lines in the /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf file
regarding my DocumentRoot.

It points to the standard /home/httpd/html. I have a simple link in my
index.html like:
<a href="/html/whatever.zip">whatever</a>
With netscape 4.73 I go to localhost, then add index.html and that works
fine. But when
I pick the link, it does not ask me where to save whatever.zip like
I want. It gives me:

Not Found

The requested URL /html/whatever.zip was not found on this server.

It will find another html link. I at first created a subdirectory
called ./html/files. It says
the same thing if I put the file in there, and I think it did not even
find an html file in here.
I know these might be 2 different problems.

I cannot find anything in the apache doc.s that tellls me if it
automatically lets you go into subdirectories
of html or not. I looked at the <Directory> command, but it does not
say, and I cannot find anything
about how it will handle *.zip files. I thought *.zip files were
automatically asked to be saved, or is my
netscape not set up with a mime-type for *.zip? Do I have to do that
manually?

1.) I want to have an <a href> link to a (zip) file so when the user
clicks it he will be asked to download and save it.
2.) How can I tell Apache to let me use subdirectories of /html or how
can I tell it a list of directories I want to use?

Any help will be appreciated.

What do you mean it will find another html link? What's the full
explicit path and how are you referencing it?

example: /home/httpd/html/whatever.zip is linked using "/whatever.zip".

If /home/httpd/html is the document root and whatever.zip is in
/home/httpd/html then /html/whatever.zip as the link is wrong.
The link should simply point to whatever.zip if the HTML file
is in the same directory. If you're referencing a file from a
different directory, you'll need to use the appropriate relative
path or the full path.

> 2.) How can I tell Apache to let me use subdirectories of /html or how

Subdirectories inherit the access rights and options from above.

Can you give better examples as to where on the filesystem the
file is located (/home/httpd/html/files/whatever.zip) and how
the file is referenced from the HTML document as a link?
(/files/whatever.zip)
