Nope, finally made the jump to RH6.2 from RH6.1.....
Was just plain lazy about stuff plus I got 2.2.16
with reiserfs working. Then took some timeout to
compile gcc-2.95.1 and 2.95.2 and the kernel again.....
Been pretty busy really. Now I've got to summon the
courage to install Cache which needs a minumum of
256M swap.

Redhat 5.2 is ancient, upgrade to 6.2 which has Gnome included. It's
relatively easy to attach an icon to a launcher, although it's still a
little kludgy in a Windows 3.1 kind of way, it's not automatic the way
it is in a Mac or the way it seems to by in Windows 98.

Thanks, he needed that...
The hardware in question, by the way, is a rock-solid recycled Netware
server, made by DEC before they were ingested by Compaq. It's "only" a
Pentium 90 but is loaded with SCSI disks, DDS-2 tape, and enough memory
to provide our group's web/database/ftp/news services. Current uptime is
over 200 days, and it was free! The Netware and NT Server folks in the
company discard boxes like this because they're "too slow".

Ryan,
I can't help you with a "permanent" fix for starting Linux in text mode;
what I CAN tell you is, at the LILO prompt, type the following:
linux 3
This will start Linux at runlevel 3 (text), and allow you to fix your
X-window problem.
If you find out how to "permanently" disable auto-booting into the
X-window, I'd appreciate your letting me know. BTW, in order to avoid
the problem you describe, I left the default set to text mode, and if I
wanna boot to X automatically, at the LILO prompt I type:
linux 5
This is what works for me. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I don't know what I did, but I kept trying over and over and finally it just
decided to take the card. I was able to get eth0 to show up after a ifconfig but
it didn't have an IP address. I ran netconfig and tried DCHP and nothing, so I
manually entered the info and it accepted it. I tried netscape and everything was
running great. I rebooted and now I am back to eth0 delaying initialization. What
is this?

Interesting.. try
modprobe 3c59x
at the command prompt.
Also, in my /etc/conf.modules, the only line to do with 3c59x is
alias eth0 3c59x
There are no others.

You can find out the current line number with Ctrl+g
You can jump to a specific number by typing a colon (:) followed by the line
number and pressing enter.
:102
I'm not sure this question should have been posted in comp.os.linux.admin and
I definately don't think it's appropriate in comp.os.linux.networking.

vi has many of these kinds of options, some other favorites of mine are:
:set ai # auto-indent
:set sm # show-matching (), [], and {} (this is nice if you program
# mutch lisp, or C, or perl, or java ...
If you want your settings to be on when you start vi, put them in

BTW: This doesn't even scratch the surface of the options that some vi clones
(notably vim) give you.

I think some wild translations are taking place with the BIOS. Fdisk
says that 7.5 GB take up about 950 cylinders of a 40GB drive. But I
looked on the label of the HD itself and it indicates that the
configuration is C:16383, H:10, S:63. Very interesting.
I'll try some of the other modes or attempt to set the HD parameters
as the setup program boots up as another person suggested. It's pretty
strange that a such a new board and BIOS would be this much hassle
(sp?).
BTW, I tried to use Red Hat 6.1 to partition the drive and it couldn't
even see a second drive.

You do ***NOT*** have to reboot your system. In general, you want to avoid
doing this:
2:07am up 22 days, 15:08, 13 users, load average: 2.98, 2.82, 2.85

Create the rc.d file, then run it as root. This should start Junkbuster.

If you're running an X windows display manager (eg: gdm, kdm, wdm, xdm,
etc.), you should be able to connect to it by specifying "indirect" or
"broadcast" as your connection method under Exceed. I forget the exact
dialogs, but from the sound of it you can work it out.
I don't believe you need to modify the display manager configs at all,
however, you can find them under /etc/X11/<display-manager>/.
You can test the configuration by starting a raw X session from console on
your Linux box, with the indirect argument. Eg:
$ X -indirect <hostname>
Under Debian, man Xserver gives detailed command line arguments. YMMV w/
RH.

More significant problem is that in my experience, Jaz sucks, and chances
are very high that the drive will bomb out on you. I've cycled through
three drives and about six disks, on very occasional use since 1997.
Haven't used the drive much at all for the past two years, and it still
fries.
I'd strongly recommend you buy a fixed disk and play with Linux on this.
You apparently already have the Jaz -- I'd suggest target practice. Have
any small-caliber weapons?
