Subject: RH7 kickstart problems with Solaris 7 NFS server
Date: 24 Nov 2000 09:12:29 -0500
I find that kickstart (rh7) is not able to mount its image from a
Solaris 7 NFS server.
But, the problem does not seem to be specifically NFS. What I mean is
that the initial mount (for the cd image) fails, but a mount I put
inthe %post section works just fine.
In more detail...
Just as the dhcp stuff is resolved and the nfs cd image is to be
mounted, the mount fails. I can see the mount attempt using snoop(1m)
on the solaris server. It's a nice clean mount and unmount.
If, instead, I choose another Linux system to provide the NFS image,
it works just fine. The install progresses to the %post section, where
I have put an explicit mount to that very same troublesome solaris 7
nfs server...
mount sol7_nfs_srvr:/export/kickstart/pkgs /tmp/pkgs
and proceed to process what is found in /tmp/pkgs. This works just
fine!
Any ideas?
I expect to spend some time looking into the details of anaconda and
resolve this, but if someone else has been here already, please spread
your knowledge.

Hi,
I want to use commands like chown or
chmod within a script . This is not allowed
for users other than root , because of sec-
urity reasons , so i tried to set the suid root
bit for the script , but to no avail .
It this possible in another way ?
Thanks in advance,

Any reason why you shouldn't create logical partitions?
You can have up to 16 partitions with a default linux install, of which
only four (hdX1 to hdX4) can be primary partitions. One of these four
can be an extended partition which can contain the other 12 partitions
(hdX5-hdX16)

One more bit:
The kernel squeaks about a "hdc: lost interrupt" while this goes down. It
also does this in character mode with only a TTY up. All my e-searches on
that topic describe it when DMA-intensive stuff like a CDROM are playing.
I'l unplug the CD and try again...

Hi Vic,
thanks for answering, first (in fact, no one else seems to have a clue here...).
Unfortunately, the Delta 44 is a PCI card, where IRQs are autoprobed.
Therefore, the module doesn't even take an IRQ parameter.
To take it further, the IRQ is detected correctly; 'cat /proc/interrupts' shows
that the driver uses IRQ 14, just like under 'doze (By the way, I have a SCSI
system with disabled IDE ports, so IRQs 14 & 15 are not needed for those and
therefore available). No hardware conflicts.
Any other idea?

Did you add the ISP's name servers to /etc/resolv.conf?

I have not had much luck in keeping a Red Hat 7.0 box running.
It appears to set up fine but after limited use in Gnome (or kde) it
hangs; usually when mouse activity is taking place.
I started removing add on cards until now there are none ( save the
graphics card).
To make sure there were not some major problems with the box itself I
installed Windows 2000 with out any problems and it ran fine.
Box:
AMD K6-2 400
Cirrus AGP graphics card.
Award Bios
2 - 30G Quantum HD's
Mouse MS Intellimouse (tried a USB)
I am using an Omni Cube but I tried direct mouse and keybord and it
still had problems.
I am not sure if it might me a bios setup problem but as far as I can
tell I tried just about every combination I could think of.

I have an IBM 46 Gb disk (DTLA-307045), on a HPT370 controller.
Just try hdparm -tT /dev/<your disk here, hde in my case) as root.
hdparm -tT /dev/hde
/dev/hde:
Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 0.93 seconds =137.63 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 1.82 seconds =35.16 MB/sec
It's the third line that should interest you. Anything above 30 Mb/s
means you're okay.

The problem is that RedHat has already applied a lot of patches against
2.2.16, and every patch on the net assumes you have a clean 2.2.16
kernel tree. So in order to use the latest and greatest ide-patches,
you'll have to take the jump and start with a clean kernel. However, I
don't think you'll have to, since the disk is recognized.
Good luck,
Jurriaan

know how to reinstall Windows 98 from scratch

way to avoid the overwriting of the Lilo boot by

the Lilo boot to be able to keep using both

Yes, you can't have set-id shell scripts, again for security reasons
(easy to get wrong, plus there used to be a race condition in the kernel
- does anyone know if this is still present in Linux?). However, you can
have set-id Perl scripts, which aren't significantly harder to write; in
fact, they may be easier to write, depending on what you're doing. See
'perldoc perlsec' for more information.

Hi,
I've been landed with a PC with a Yamaha DS-XG "Ystation" PCI sound card.
Are there any (free) drivers out there for this card ? I've kind of been
trawling around a bit trying to sort this one out, but haven't got anywhere.
There's something (newish) called `alsa' which claims to be able to do
something about this card. But I don't have enough documentation to (a)
find out if it can really help (b) if so, do it.
Any guidance or help on this matter is much appreciated.
Cheers

I don't know if this will help but..
While trying to get RedHat 7.0 installed and working correctly, I
removed my xg card (which RH did not detect on initial
installation),then replaced it on a subsequent boot-up and RH detected
it and installed a driver. It worked but am not sure if the "XG"
specific stuff is supported.

I have had trouble in the past with my IMPS/2 mouse when reinstalling
and upgrading debian. I suggest you try and manually configure
/etc/X11/XF86Config, which sometimes has the wrong mouse protocol
entered. Also use /usr/sbin/gpmconfig to sort out the mouse in the console.
Should sort it out.
I actually don't mind dselect (!).

I had that problem. Looking at a Red Hat page that a friend sent me, (
http://www.redhat.com/support/manuals/RHL-7-Manual/ref-guide/s1-sysadmin-b
uild-kernel.html ) the trick appears to be
make mrproper (cleans out a lot of config files)
make oldconfig (sets up your config to match what RedHat supplied)
make dep, make clean and make bzImage (just to check that everything
works)
then you can make xconfig make menuconfig to set the config up to what you
really want and do the usual dep, clean and bzImage combo.
