Date: Sun, 09 Jul 2000 16:20:17 GMT

I have an IDE CD-RW that I want to set up. I have recompiled the
kernel (2.20) WITH SCSI support, SCSI CD-ROM support, SCSI
generic support, and SCSI emulation support, and WITHOUT
IDE/ATAPI CD-ROM support. When I try to mount the CD, just
to read it, it complains about the SCSI driver. The messages from
mount say that it knows the device is read-only (pre-recorded
CD in the tray), but it cannot mount it. I forget the exact message,
but it is the generic message about error, or too many systems
mounted, or whatever.

Thanks.

I tried using mscdex.exe but could not get it working.

Any clues?.

Hello, I would greatly appreciate it if I could get information on getting my
3Com USRobotics Courier V.Everything 33.6/28.8 modem working with Mandrake
Linux 7.0 running with a Pentium II 400mhz 64MB 8.4GB, 2.1GB 32x Yamaha sound
card system. I got my isp information (worldshare.net) and setting it up in
Kppp. Everything goes okay until when it tries Initilizing the modem. BUT when
I try the Kppp terminal and minicom to test the modem out, it initilizises it
just fine. Oh, and I did set the Connection Speed at the correct rate (56700).
I am relatively new to Linux... So don't make it TOO confusing :D

I've got an older Matrox Millenium in my RH 6.0 server and as I
recall, in order to get it working properly I had to NOT probe for the
clock chip. When I told it not to, things went just fine.

I can't remember where those instructions are, but I definitely saw it
in b&w somewhere.

You can use mpg123 to do this.. It's a pretty good command line
utility.

$ mpg123 -w (mysong.wav) (mysong.mp3)

I added the brackets for clarity... don't use them..

What would be the best way to set up the partitions to give me the most room
to work with this thing. Right now I have:

on the 2 gig drive
/boot 17 megs

/usr rest of drive

on the 1.7 gig drive
96 meg swap
/home and /usr/local splitting the rest of the drive

Hello,

I'm having a real problem downloading my e-mail with Pine. I have
no trouble sending mail out since I'm logged into the remote
server and it doesn't ask for a password to authenticate me. But
I can't find the correct entry to make in the inbox path. I've
tried {server.com}<USERNAME> but I keep getting a statement that
the remote computer is rejecting me. I have no trouble telnetting
into port 110 and viewing my e-mail that way.

Does anybody have any pointers or any place that I kind find more
info. I've read through the on-line documentation pretty
carefully, but I can't really find enough on the proper way to
write an inbox statement. I've also tried calling Concentric's
tech support and they told me that they 've never heard of
anybody using Pine to access e-mail (hard to believe) on their
servers.

I'm sure I'm simply not configuring some text file somewhere
properly.

Thanks,

Stan Rogouski

p.s. Until I get this fixed I'm going to have to use Remarq and
spam people with stuff like the Keen.com ad below, which I hope
people ignore.

I am currently running 2 (soon to be 3) computers on my home LAN via a

other WS will be Win98. The power here seems to go out whenever the
weather channel even MENTIONS thunderstorms. I want to get a UPS for
my computers, but don't want to spend the big bucks on a network UPS.
Is there a way to have the "server" use it's apmd to execute a script
that would tell all the computers to shut down in X minutes (I would
obviously want to save anything I'm working on if I'm at the
computer). I would think it would be easy for the 2 linux boxes, but
what about the win98.

If Win98 doesn't like shutting down remotely, what about using it as
the UPS controller and sending commands to the Linux boxes??

Corel maintains that you need at least 2 Mb video ram for the GUI to
install. Practice , however, dictates that 4Mb or more are better. If you
have a motherboard with integrated video you may be able to add what you
need to the board otherwise a newer video card is in order. If you can't
make the changes above, the installation, if it succeeds at all will
default to the Debian text based distribution on which Corel Linux is
based.

Are you unaware of the whole DeCSS thing, or are you reserving your

Hmmm, may be dangerous assumption. The Multia's at work are all
100MHz Pentium boxes. Our Alpha's were all large flat battleship-grey
boxes sitting under the monitors.

Somehow I don't think the run of the mill Linux distribution (at
least, the ones sold in Fry's, or stuffed in the backs of Linux books)
would work on a true Alpha processor. The chip set is so different you'd
need a fresh compile targeted for the processor. This is not to say that
some of the distributors don't have Alpha builds (I'm sure I saw one
mentioned on the Mandrake site), but they take some effort to obtain.

First off, I had this modem (USR 56k internal PNP) working great under
RH 6.1 before I wiped my hard drive and reinstalled everything. It
works perfect under Win98.

I booted to Linux, ran pnpdump, edited isapnp.conf to match my settings
in Win (IO 2f8, IRQ 7), ran isapnp isapnp.conf, message says the
hardware is set up ok. Then setserial /dev/ttyS1 auto_irq autoconfig
${STD_FLAGS}. No errors, but when I do cat /proc/interrupts, it
doesn't show up. setserial /dev/ttyS1 shows IRQ 0 set for Com2. I
also did cat /proc/interrupts prior to setserial, and there is nothing
using IRQ 7.

If I do wvdialconf, it finds the modem, but sets it at 1200; it dials
and I can connect. If I manually set it higher, wvdial reports that
there is no modem.

Please help, this is driving me crazy...

The standard irq for /dev/ttyS1 is irq 3, so auto_irq will not work for
setserial, so you have to specify the irq. You could try adding the
following to /etc/rc.d/rc.local:

/bin/setserial /dev/ttyS1 port 0x02f8 irq 7 ^auto_irq ^skip_test autoconfig

Then 'setserial -bg /dev/ttyS1' after that will tell you if everything was
set correctly.

A ppp connection will be very erratic or slow, if it works at all, when
the modem is using a different irq than Linux thinks it is.

I dual boot win98 and Caldera's OpenLinux 2.3 with KDE. I
recently set up access to a win partition following Using the
July 2000 edition of Linux Magazine (www.linux-mag.com).

I modified /etc/fstab with:

/dev/hda5 /mnt/win vfat auto,user,rw 0 0

Then I created the /mnt/win dir. This works great with one down
side. I can only change or add files with root. I can't get it to
allow any groups or users other than that one.

If anyone can point me to what I am doing wrong I would
appreciate it. If I haven't supplied enough info to go on I
apologize, I just don't know what other info to give.

Subject: Kernel Compiling (bootsect.s & boot.h)
Date: Sun, 09 Jul 2000 19:50:38 GMT

My quantum HD crashed so I have installed SuSE to a new
drive and now I would like to compile in SMP and SCSI
support. The compile goes fine and then dies near (apparently)
the end. vmlinux exists in /usr/src/linux after the
failed compile and its size is about 1.5 to 1.8 MB's,
depending on choosen options (y/m/n).

I have been trying to compile a new kernel for my Abit BP6.
I am using SuSE 6.2 and have source tree's for both
2.2.10.SuSE and 2.2.16.SuSE. I have tried compiling
to zImage and bzImage and both always fail (note that
on the same system with the previous drive I had success-
fully compiled 3-4 kernels and all worked as intended).

The compile for both kernels (2.2.10 and 2.2.16) have failed at the
point shown below.
The 2.2.16 error message is identical except for the kernel version
number.

******************* Make Error Message ************************
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.2.10.SuSE/arch/i386/boot'
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `/usr/src/linux/include/asm/boot.h',

make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.2.10.SuSE/arch/i386/boot'
make: *** [zImage] Error 2
************* End of Make Error Message ************************

Note that the "`bootsect.s'" text has also been printed as:
"`bbotsect.s'" when I have tried to compile to the bzImage kernel.

Note also that the ls command produces:
ls -alF /usr/src/linux/include/asm/boot.h
ls: /usr/src/linux/include/asm/boot.h: No such file or directory

and then note that the bootsect.s is found in the directory
        /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/
where linux is a sym-link to the appropriate directory (2.2.16.*)
currently.

=============  2000/07/09  11:51  ==================================

Ok, now I've tried over 8 times to have this thing compile. Every
time I get errors with the following being the most common error
message of them all:

******************* Make Error Message *************************
nm vmlinux | grep -v '\(compiled\)\|\(\.o$\)\|\( [aU]
\)\|\(\.\.ng$\)\|\(LASH[RL]DI\)' | sort > System.map

make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.2.16.SuSE/arch/i386/boot'
make: *** [bzImage] Error 2
************* End of Make Error Message ************************

Does anyone have any idea what I can do to circumvent this frustrating
situation??

Thanx in advance.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

PS:

I had another error (and it seems to be fixed now) which was:

==============  2000/07/09  09:40  ==================================

I reran make menuconfig and tried to be slightly more conservative
in my selections. I then reran the command:
        time make dep clean bzImage
and then got the following error message:

******************* Make Error Message *************************
init/main.o(.data.init+0x1b4): undefined reference to `md_setup'
drivers/block/block.a(genhd.o): In function `device_setup':
genhd.o(.text.init+0xef): undefined reference to `md_setup_drive'
make: *** [vmlinux] Error 1
************* End of Make Error Message ************************

I think that the above is a "red herring" in that it probably had
an error introduced (a dependency error) during the menuconfig
phase. I only had this error message for a short time period and then
the compile errors returned to the original one (which is illustrated
twice in the error messages above.
