Hey MJ,

I've also added the following to make Apache and TomCat happy:
JAVA_HOME=3D/usr/local/bin/jdk
JAVA_PATH=3D/usr/local/bin/jdk
TOMCAT_HOME=3D/usr/local/jakarta-tomcat

PATH=3D$PATH:$JAVA_PATH

export JAVA_HOME JAVA_PATH TOMCAT_HOME

I've put it in java.sh under /etc/profile.d since startup runs all .sh=20
scripts in that directory - but that's RedHat.

With the current ssh-agent you only need to run it as a sister of the
session. (and get the envirenment variables set).

> $ ssh-agent startx

You should better set the exec ssh-agent <your window manager> in .xsession
since the ssh agent needs to be directly connected by sockets and
environment, both wont work with x servers in between.

I have successfully changed which partition on the first drive is the
primary boot partition from LILO on another partition, but I have been
unsuccessful trying to boot Windows on another drive from LILO.

Fortunately the BIOS that came with my Evergreen CPU upgrade allows
setting any drive in the BIOS as the boot drive. So I was able to boot
into Win95 on hdb after doing an fdisk /mbr on it while set as the boot
drive. At the time hda3 was Win98 FAT32. Not sure how Linux would see
such a BIOS change in the drive order, since I switched back to normal to
boot Linux (from LILO on /boot partition hda1).

Since Linux does not have any problem with its /boot or / on any drive,
and Windows does, why not simply put Windows where it wants to be?

Sounds like a loading issue (see them often). Best guess, use a boot
disk to access your drive and edit /etc/lilo.conf and change linear to
lba32 or add linear if it isn't there, then run lilo and reboot to
check. This LI often occurs of you installed linux farther back on your
HDD. If you are using a newer distribution then all should be fine after
this. If using an older distribution you may need to upgrade your lili
package. If you are dual booting you can use windows to download it and
then use the boot disk to get to linux then access the partition and
upgrade, then try the the above.

So if you call yourself localhost.local instead of localhost.localdomain,
is the former listed in your /etc/hosts? Even though I have a real
internet hostname, it is for ppp which is only up when needed, so I use an
extra loopback IP 127.0.0.2 for my hostname so all the networking stuff
can find myself.

And how exactly are you connected to those sites? Can you even ping
localhost?

First check ifconfig and see if the lo interface 127.0.0.1 is up. Without
that I don't think much other networking is going to work. Then you need
to read the various HOWTO's about NET and Ethernet to get your network
card up.

James, I'm one week new to a dual boot Win98 / SuSE Linux 7.0 machine with
multiple hard drives (still working things out) but choice of boot is no
problem. I use a great boot manager from Power Quest called "Boot Magic"
included with "Partition Magic". The following documentation from
"Partition Magic" help files may explain what you are experiencing. Note:
that Win98 must boot from the first hard disk and I believe Linux will boot
from any disk. When you "unplug" the first 2 disks the second 2 become the
"first". I hope this helps!

"Operating System-Specific Boot Information

Most operating systems, including DOS, Windows 3.x, Windows 95/98, and
Windows NT, rely on the active primary partition when they boot from a hard
disk. However, different operating systems rely on the active primary
partition in different ways.

DOS, Windows 3.x, and Windows 95/98 must boot from an active primary
partition on the first hard disk drive.

Windows NT can boot from a logical partition, but the Windows NT boot
program must be in the active primary partition on the first hard disk.

OS/2 can be booted from a logical partition; however, the extended
partition containing the logical partition must be contained within the
first 2 GB of the hard disk. Additionally, the Boot Manager utility provided
with OS/2 must be present on the hard disk in order to install OS/2."

Have you checked the Linux Laptop home page
http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/kharker/linux-laptop/

I don't know which video chip you have, but mine had the earlier NeoMagic
256AV 2.5 MB which was already supported by the standard SVGA
server. Newer 6 MB NeoMagic had to manually configure things for that
server (calling it 4 MB RAM) or by compiling frame buffer support and
using that X server. There may be more support in X version 4.

Apparently you only enabled .cgi as CGI in your webserver conf file(s).
Simply add .pl to that as a space separated list like:

AddHandler cgi-script .cgi .pl

I have never used Wingate, so I don't know if you simply point to it as a
default route or configure your browser for its IP and port.

If you want to use a web proxy, you could use squid, but that is somewhat
limiting (web and ftp). You can do more by simply using the Linux box
to masquerade your LAN to use your internet IP. See the IPCHAINS-HOWTO.

Hi, guys. You probably had more discussions before this, but I missed them.

I'm having a coexisting OS problem that I was wondering if anyone of you
could help.

I've a 30G and a 6G hard drives. The 30G drive is partitioned into 10G,
~9.7G, ~4.5G, ~4.5G. And the 6G is partitioned into 3 x 2G.

I installed Window2000 in the 10G partition of the 30G hd. How do I install
Linux in this case? I read somewhere that I have to prepare a small
partition (< 8G) for Linux, but in which partition? In the 10G partition?
How do I partition the 10G partition w/o thrashing it? I may be asking dump
questions, but I really need to find the answer.

TIA.

Min.

The problem is likely wvdial which attempts to log into a shell first even
if you do not have shell access. Either edit the connection and find the
box to let pppd handle negotiation or set "Stupid mode = 1" in
/etc/wvdial.conf and then set up the matching ppp (ppp0 for your first
dialup) with linuxconf (or netcfg in X) as a pap authenticated connection.
That way wvdial will stay out of the picture and let ppp do the pap auth.

However, you might also have to put the noauth option in /etc/ppp/options
so your box does not require your ISP to authenticate to you (which it
will not likely do and you don't have a secret for).

You might also enable more debugging initially either by selecting that
option in the linuxconf or netcfg setup and/or adding kdebug 7 to the
field for other options.

Use the date command (see 'man date') or use ntpdate from the xntp package
to get it from internet time servers. Then after the system clock is
updated, use 'setclock' to set the CMOS clock/calendar.

i'd like to thank everyone who helped me with my previous
post...but i'm still having
problems figuring out how to use a rescue disk.

i'm using a small distro that can fit on one floppy and load
into a ramdisk
...i could not figure out how to mount my harddrive.
(btw: i'm now dual booting os/2 w3 (fat) on hda1 and
mandrake7 boot partition hda5)

i setup the ramdrive and can now mount my os/2 partition by
doing the following;

mkdir /DOS
cd DOS
mount /dev/hda1

and i can now see my os/2 partition...

so i figured i should be able to do something similar for
linux...
so i did this:
mkdir /ext2
cd ext2
mount /dev/hda5

but i just get an error that there is no device hda5 in
fstab
( i even edited fstab and made the entry...to no effect)

any ideas?

I have been using the somewhat easier commercial opensound.com drivers
since before Alsa had anything for it. But this link will explain how
to set up the Alsa modules for it:
