Subject: fsck exit with signal 11. 60 GB maxtor disk. fsck hangs
Date: 10 Jul 2000 08:31:18 -0700

folks,

I am running Linux linux 2.3.99-pre5 #17 SMP.
Installed new 60 GB disk, ok, installed ext2 on it, ok been
using for few days ok. 32.9 GB used. I was copying a 2 GB
file from another device to this device, when Linux froze.
(33 GB limit problem?).

I reboot. I do fsck on the 60 GB disk, then I get this error
without fsck clearly finishing its job:

"warning ... fsck.ext2 for device /dev/hdb1 exited with signal 11"

OK, I try the fsck command again, now it hangs (for 12 hrs nothing).

I ^C the command. Then mount the disk any way, and it mounts !

not sure if I am now mounting and using a file system that can
be corrupted somewhere.

any ideas what might be going on?

thanks,
Nasser

Hi all,

My linux box takes roughly 2 minutes to get the login prompt when telnet
from another box in the LAN, same goes to ftp and POP3 connection.

I understand the tcpd is doing a reverse dns checkup to see the origin of
user login destination. But this long delay is really irritating. Is there
any way to speed up authentication without compromising security.

The way I remember, when I freshly installed RedHat Linux 6.2 it did not
take this long, and now after two weeks things are getting delayed much
longer.

Is it possible my box is being hacked ?

Yes. You need to install Samba version 2.0.5a (IIRC) or later and enable
a handful of options. Samba's support for this functionality is not yet
complete, though. Samba will authenticate logons, and can maintain
roaming profiles, but that's about it. Samba TNG (an experimental
development branch of Samba) can do a bit more, but even it's not
complete. You need Samba TNG to handle this task if you've got Windows
2000 clients.

For more information, consult the Samba documentation.

I'm confused by this. Since the boot partition is a primary partition
spanning LBA 651 to 842 the entire boot ext2 lies below the 1024 LBA
limit. Are you saying that the ext2 physical cylinder limit is what
matters? I haven't had this problem with other LBA SCSI LILO installs;
here's one from another machine which works OK:

Disk /dev/sda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 1111 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 127 1020096 6 FAT16

/dev/sda4 383 1111 5855692+ 5 Extended

/dev/sda7 1085 1100 128488+ 82 Linux swap

So what's the difference?

I tried linear as well as directly specifing drive geometry

You can't go wrong with any of the O'Reily books...

Not to mention the video quality. Pixelization something fierce on a
450MHz system, 192M RAM, VooDoo 3 2000 16M vid card, and 17" monitor.

Squares about 1" across at times. Frames that move in jerks and jumps.
Sound that follows video at 1 or 2 second intervals, sometimes worse.

ASF may generate files 1/2 the size of MPEGs, but I'm not sure the quality
is worth the savings in media costs and storage space.

Check http://www.shoutcast.com - you'll find literally hundreds of streaming

Suggest a streaming Shoutcast server. Plenty exist for all platforms, and
I believe there are even a few OSS servers available.

Tell 'em it'll likely save bandwidth, increase quality, and increase
listenership.

Subject: How to Change Bootable Drive?
Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2000 12:59:43 -0400

I have a dual boot system with Windows on /dev/hda and Linux on
/dev/hdb. Lilo is installed on the mbr of /dev/hda which is also the
master drive. Now that it is clear which is the superior OS, I no
longer require Windows and want to reuse /dev/hda on another machine.

Could someone suggest an approach for making /dev/hdb bootable for
Linux? Is it as simple as changing lilo to install on /dev/hdb, i.e.
lilo.conf says boot=/dev/hdb and re-run lilo and removing the Windows
pick (of course)? I would also change the jumpers for /dev/hdb to make
it the master and physically remove /dev/hda.

I see you've already seen the slightly more arrogant and gun-jumping portion
of the Linux group participants. Unfortunate, but hey, there's one born
every second - right after the proverbial sucker. {smile}

Firstly, to answer your question (and pay attention at the end, there's a
lesson coming up :> );

I use MP3Blaster to convert MP3's to WAV's. I don't think it'll go the
other way, but hey, you've already received two suggestions that answer
THAT question. (Read before respond. Always helps. :> ).

MP3Blaster also makes a great command-line MP3 player, IMHO. You can
find it by searching for "mp3blaster" on LinuxBerg (http://www.linuxberg.com)
and either grab it from there or click on over to the software homepage,
which I can't recall at the moment.

Secondly (and here's that ever dreaded lesson :> );

When you crosspost to multiple newsgroups, ettiquete does declare that you
should set a followup-to: header line, as I've done above, to prevent
threads from being repeated (as somebody put it) in N+1 groups. It helps
keep this chaotic place we know and love called Usenet in some order. :>

Organized chaos, if you will.

Don't let certain less tasteful individuals dissuade you. Usually the
bunch in here (mostly in comp.os.linux.misc) are pretty helpful. I try
to stay away from the alt.* backbone of groups as much as possible. The
idiotchildren tend to levitate towards anything starting with alt, it
seems.

Good luck with your Linux endeavours, and I hope you'll continue to post
all your questions, comments, and concerns in here! Eventually, you'll be
one of the people answering questions just as much as you ask 'em!

Linux is a non-stop learning curve, and it's fun the whole way up. Have fun!

Subject: Network Help Needed
Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2000 13:57:02 -0400

Hi,

I have been having problems trying to
connect to the Internet through
Mandrake 7.1.
Mandrake recognizes my NIC card and when it
boots up eth0 is in the list
and everything is ok. I must be doing
something wrong in the network
config files. I have used netcfg to edit
it, but still nothing. Every
time I try to connect or ping a site, all I
get is host unknown.

Is there a standard of IP addresses to use?
I have used 192.168.1.1 and
still nothing. I have read all the docs,
but still nothing. I have use
many examples from magazines and so on.
If anyone has this same problem or if
anyone has resolved this issue,
please let me know.

I have a EnterNet SMC adapter. My provider
is BellSouth and they don't
support Linux in any form or fashion. When
I boot into Windows, I have
to connect from an icon on my desktop to
establish the connection, but
in Mandrake, how do I startup my service
without that icon? A newbie
question.

TIA,
Ron

I've just installed Redhat 6.2 with Gnome, and I've got two
menu points in my "Start" menu: PPP Network Dialer and
Network Monitor. I've configured my ISP (which I dial
using an ISDN-modem) but every time I call up, I can
see the modem hangs up after approx. 5 seconds. I've
also tried configuring a ppp-connection manually, but
that doesn't work either.

Any suggestions?
