You will get this message if you mount an unchecked fs, sure you can
ignore
this warning, but why did the authors put it in then...

EXT2-fs warning: mounting unchecked fs, running e2fsck is recommended

You could render your whole filesystem unusable, you have been warned...

Good luck

Well ... if it crashed a file system check may not be such a bad idea ?
A JFS is helpful for sure, but a JFS is not going to prevent any loss
of real data.

Still and depending on how you're using your system, of course you can
skip the fsck. I've a self built system, so your /etc/bcheckrc is going
to look different or reside in a different path, but an extract ...

echo "*** RUNNING FSCK - PLEASE WAIT ***"
FSSTATUS=0
while read FSDEV FSMOUNT FSTYPE FSFLAGS FSDUMPFREQ FSFSCKPASS
do
      if [ $FSTYPE = ext2 -a $FSFSCKPASS -ne 0 ]
      then
         if [ $FSMOUNT = "/" ]
         then
            FSROOT=$FSDEV
         fi

         /sbin/e2fsck $FSFORCEFSCK -p $FSDEV; FSSTATUS=$(( FSSTATUS | $? ))
      fi
done < /etc/fstab

if [ $FSSTATUS -ge 2 ]
then
   echo "*** FSCK EXITED WITH $FSSTATUS - STARTING MAINTAINCE SHELL ***"
   /sbin/sulogin /dev/console
fi

... say e2fsck is run via some script. Means you can disable a fsck
easily. E.g. add something like ...

if [ ! -f /nofsck ]
then
fi

...

Question is when to create /nofsck though ... you could boot into
different runlevels, say 2 for "normal" operation and 4 for development
work, perhaps mounting some file systems ro and so on.

You could even disable the "standard" fsck completely, run a cronjob
which creates a tag file /dofsck once a week and only check your
filesystems if this file exists, removing it afterwards.

>I will then have to run fsck manually some times, or I would put it in my cron
>deamon weekly...
[-]
You had better not run a e2fsck on a busy system. Mind a life system
keeps changing the file systems information and a fs should be mounted
ro before checking it.

In short since the file system check is not a kernel thingy you're
pretty flexible.

Ta',
Juergen

Subject: weird LILO prob-
Date: Sat, 28 Apr 2001 22:43:28 GMT

All,

got a weird problem with lilo- after rebuilding my kernel, and copying
the resulting
bzImage to /boot (as bzImage.19mine), I added this stanza:

image=/boot/bzImage.19mine
 label=19mine
 read-only
 root=/dev/hda7

to my lilo.conf which previously worked great with:

boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=60
linear
vga=ask
default=19

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.19-6.2.1
 label=19
 read-only
 root=/dev/hda7

other=/dev/hda1
 label=dos

This all was ok, except, when I reboot and select "19mine", lilo prints
out:

Error 0X00

and sits there waiting for me to change my selection.

Does anyone know what this means ?
THANKS to all,

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

BTW, if I give the _vmlinux_ that my compile produced to lilo, it says
that it's too big...
anyone know why? Why didn't my compile produce a _vmlinuz_ file ? (I
did make mrproper/
dep/xconfig then make ; make modules ; make modules_install). Thx.

Hi, I'm new to the world of Linux -- or, rather, I'd like to be.
I'm trying to install, but Mandrake isn't recognizing all of my hard drive
space. It only sees just shy of 2GB instead of the entire 8. I wonder if
this is a bios issue (they're so old there's no option to boot from CD) or
if there are utilities that will help me to get around this? I have tried
everything I could think of, which albeit probably isn't much. I've looked
online, I'm out of ideas and would really appreciate some help or even a
nudge in the right direction. Here's what I've done so far:
    I tried to upgrade my bios, but apparently they are some Tiawanese beta
version and there's no info to be found.
    I went to the Maxtor site (it's a Maxtor hd) and got something that will
help me partition it, but it will only see more than 2 gb if I choose FAT32.
When I choose FAT32 the Mandrake install it has a problem reading that. It
reads the FAT16 2GB just fine though -- figures. I've tried using that
partition utility every which way to no avail.
    I thought I would try an end run and initially install muLinux since I
read that that will use UMSDOS and I could have it recognize my existing
Maxtor partition, but the img is too large (by 40kb argh) to fit on a floppy
so I can transfer it from this computer to the one I'm trying to install
Linux on.

    There will be nothing else on this system but Linux, but I would still
like a bit more than 2 gb of space. Is there something out there that can
help or do I need to get a new mb or am I just stuck? Or am I just missing
something really obvious?

Thanks for any and all ideas
Jif

Of course, I know the files I'm working on can get lost like that, so checking
the system file is a good idea, but it's just so long!

I've seen that Redhat 7.1 held reiserfs. Do you think it is installed
automatically? I've been wanting to switch to Redhat 7 for a long time, it
could be a good idea... I've started the download of the 3 .iso...

Subject: Burning Red Hat 7.1 CDs. Bizarre failure.
Date: Sat, 28 Apr 2001 22:59:37 GMT

Greetings.

  How does one burn the Red Hat 7.1 iso images? I am new to CD
  burning and have recently aquired an HP 9150 burner. Following
  is what I do:

  # cdrecord -v speed=4 dev=0,0,0 -data seawolf-i386-disc1.iso

  Everything seams to go nice, but then when I test it, I get the
  following:

  # mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /cdrom
  # cd /cdrom/RedHat/base
  # cat TRANS.TBL
  cat: TRANS.TBL: Input/output error

  ...and in /var/log/messages, I see:

  Apr 27 08:35:27 snah kernel: attempt to access beyond end of device
  Apr 27 08:35:27 snah kernel: 16:40: rw=0, want=495104, limit=34848
  Apr 27 08:35:27 snah kernel: dev 16:40 blksize=2048 blocknr=247551 sector=990204
size=2048 count=1

  Apr 27 08:35:27 snah kernel: dev 16:40 blksize=2048 blocknr=247552 sector=990208
size=2048 count=1

  The MD5 checksums of my iso images are ok. When I mount the
  seawolf-i386-disc1.iso on the loopback device:

  # mount -t iso9660 -o ro,loop=/dev/loop0 seawolf-i386-disc1.iso /test

  ...I have no problems.

  I tried burning twice. Either my HP 9150 cd burner does not cut it,
  or I am missing a parameter.

  Anybody got a clue?

Sincerely,
Hans Deragon

P.S. If this message sounds familiar, it is. I posted this message in

I checked out my rc files and found out the fsck call are done if there is no
directory named "/fastboot", so, I believe that for security reasons, I should
not update any files in order to always disable fsck, but I could simply create
such directory every time I begin devellopping OpenGL... What do you think?

After you rebuit your kernel and edited your lilo.conf file did you
run the map installer, i.e. /sbin/lilo? You need to do this every
time you change your lilo.conf and/or your kernel. This updates the
boot sector you've selected with the new information.

  I recently added and upgraded kernel to my systerm (2.4.0) When I
boot it, towards the end of startup, when various daemons are started,
there are warning messages similar to:

Warning: /boot/System.map has wrong kernel version!

I looked at System.map and it appears to be a kernel symbol table. I
can't quite figure out what it's for, and I don't remember any
mentions of this file in the kernel HOWTO. I'd appreciate any tips on
how to get rid of these error messages and why they appear.

You mean "file" fastboot ? Yes, but you'll need root permissions. Lazy
me I'd try to automate the creation of the file, though ;)

cdrecord needs to know how big the disc image is (I don't know why it
can't figure it out for itself, but never mind...). Try adding the
-isosize flag to the command line and see if it burns properly. I always
include -isosize when burning data CDs, and have never had a problem.

Hope this helps.

The generic way which will work on almost all linux systems:

uname -a

If you're running Red Hat you could also do:

rpm -qi kernel

Well, you are using a nonstandard setup here. In that case, you've to
put the right entry in lilo.conf. The BIOS count the drives from 0x80 on
( for the bootdisk). So the disk on IDE3/0 (aka /dev/hde) gets the 0x80
and the second disk is probably /dev/hdf. So /dev/hdg (on IDE4/0) gets
the 0x82. But lilo assumes /dev/hdc <=> 0x82 and /dev/hdg <=> 0x86.

So try a entry in lilo.conf:
disk=/dev/hdg
bios=0x82

to get lilo working

Install lilo onto the "boot partition" of linux; then configure sys commander
to boot linux in the "boot partition" location.

I have a machine with the old (1st gen) of sys com and have on the
1st hdd: dos, win98se
2nd hdd: linux with mutiple partitions.

Use your help function in system commander.
