I got the same thing when using a video card which was not supported very
well by X. I resolved this by booting linux in a graphical VGA mode.

I remember that the X docs mentioned this somewhere. Any case, in lilo.conf
try adding the following line:

vga=ask

then run lilo, reboot and try any of the hires modes.

Bye.

Easier - for just websites, get squid http://www.squid-cache.org, and
use it's redirector interface to maintain a list of blocked sites.

Subject: Linux Installation HDD problems
Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2000 18:30:06 GMT

When I attempt to install Red Hat Linux 6.2 on CD I receive an error
message at that point of the installation where it asks me which kind of
installation I would like to do (e.g., custom, ...). I have two EIDE HDD's.
One has Win98, the other is formated as FAT32 (?), but only has one file
present (command.com).

My intention is to place Linux on the second HDD. I have been told that the
problem is that because the Plug-and-Pray feature is turned on in the Bios,
that Linux is not recognizing it (???). There are 2 places to change the
settings for the HDD in the BIOS that I have. One lets you set the HDD as
manual or AUTO. The other actually lets you change the parameters (e.g.,
cylinders, ...). I tried tweaking some of the parameters. but without
success.

Here is my setup:
I have 1 EIDE 27GB HDD UDMA ATA/66 connected as a Master. My second HDD is
a EIDE 30GB HDD UDMA ATA/66 connected as a slave.

I also have a DVD drive, connected as an IDE Master, and a CD R/W connected
as an IDE ????/ (I'm guessing this is a slave, but don't know).

What should I do to fix this?

Thanks.
Dave

Still more in the saga of trying to get Corel Linux 1.1 to install:

1. Did an fdisk /mbr, to reset the master boot record to Win98, then
did an install of Corel Linux 1.1, and basically everything almost
worked. This time, I kept the root partition below the 8GB line.
Corel then replaced the MBR with lilo, gave a reasonably nice splash
screen, and came up.

2. Corel did blow away all of the partitions above the one I installed
it in (8). This was to say the least rather annoying and ill-behaved.
I'm trying to work out if there's some way now that Corel is working to
split out the /boot directory below 8GB, and copy the rest higher, but
haven't come up with the right combination, at least one that gets
Corel to boot. All the other distributions seem to allow a small /boot
partion, below the 8GB line, but Corel doesn't seem to.

So, I'll probably play some more, but it's beginning to look like I
cannot fit Corel Linux onto my system. A shame, as I wanted a Debian
based distribution (all the rest are RPM), but I just cannot afford as
much room as Corel needs below the 8GB line.

Go to your BIOS and disable bootvirus detection.

Hi,

I'm trying to set up linux on my PC. I've manged to install redhat 6.0. It
kind of works , although i'm having problems with the XFree configuration.
I've worked out that I need to install device drivers for the intel 810
chipset, but addtionally to this I also need a newer version of XFree,
currently I seem to have version 3.3.3, I need at least version 3.3.5.. So
do i need to totaly install a new evrsion of XFree or can I just update and
install a couple of files to ghet to 3.3.5?

Additonally since i have a winmodem at the moment I can't acces the ftp
sites directly, from my linux partition, is there a way I could FTP the file
to the WIN 98 partition and then copy them to the linux partition?

Thanks,

Neil

Hi Jan;
Any user with the root password can have "super user" priviledges by
issuing the "su" command, and then typing in the root password. Paat this,
I am just learning System Administration also.

Hi Key;
Try running Xconfigurator, it has solved some of my problems in the
past. If it does not "probe" sucsessfully, "don't probe" and set up
manually. This utility really pulled my fat out of the fire on a laptop
install.

Subject: Application Set-up : Star Office
Date: Wed, 05 Jul 2000 21:19:12 -0600

Hi Folks;
I recently built my wife a new computer, upgraded her old one, and
installed RH 6.1 on it. It seems to be working fine, with few problems,
except for Star Office.
I have done a standard install of Star Office, to the standard
directory (/root/Office51) and it works fine, with the following
exception : I can only run Star Office as "root", or in "super user"
mode, after issuing the "su" command in terminal, then running a shell
script which executes Star Office.
    Things I have tried:

                    - used chmod to give all users permissions on the
"Office51" directory (This is a single user box, and the only other user
is my "Non root" account).
                    - putting a KDE link file into the appropriate
"share directory" (link shows up but permission is denied)
                    - as noted above enter a terminal window, get
"super user" privileges and run a script (which works)

This is minimally satisfactory on a single user system, but I intend
to network the box, and let others log in.
This situation would then be unsatisfactory.

Suggestions?

Yes, I think what you refere to is the /etc/inetd.conf file. I have the
following entries which was set up as standard by the Red Hat installation
(6.0):
ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.ftpd -l -a
telnet stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.telnetd

This basically tells the Internet Demon (inetd) what protocol and server
program to invoke for a particular service.

Think there's also a /etc/initd (or similarly named "/etc/in*" file)or
something file that you need to edit to add or remove a "#" to allow
telnet/root access thru ftp. Almost positive here. Did it a few times
here but in windowz now with StarOffice 5.2! <tis' cool!>

Help!
I first got a mandrake 7.0 from one of the linux magazines and tried that.
That one never got past the "inititalizing cd-rom" stage. Now I got the
7.1 version. It sometimes actually starts to install packages (usually it
crashes during the stage where we select which partition is to be mounted
as /boot and /). The crashes during installation are at random points when
it is copying installation files to the hard-drive. Keeps giving weird errors
like

"segmentation fault .. signal 11 received .. blah blah blah .." or
"package headers not found .." or
"missing memory as installation crashes"

What am I doing wrong ? I have a P166 / 64MB EDO / 32X CDROM /
4mb ATI 3d Xpression+ and my 2nd hard-drive is partitioned as follows:

128mb (swap partition) + 450mb (/boot partition) + 1500 (/ partition) + 2G (fat32
partition).
