I too am having problems. I have installed the latest RPM and now at
least it recognises the card ( Although it says it is a ADK Comet
under 'dmesg', I assume ( hope ) this is because of similar chip sets ).
When I try to ping anything other then the local host, it can't find
anything and if I use 'ifconfig' it comes up with errors under TX and
RX.
When I do 'cat /proc/ioport' I get a value of
c2824c00-c2824c7f : eth0
I initially try to set io=0x300 and irq=11. Any suggestions would be
gratefully recieved.

I have a server running Linux (red hat 6.1 - 2.2.12 kernel) I have two
network cards, with separate IPs nad I am running a virtual server on
one ip address. I am using the server primarily to run as a search
engine, using the thunderstone webinator. I have everything set up and
running fine. However, the last time that apache restarted, it appears
to have caused some sort of problem, as now the search engine won't
run. In addition to this, the connections to both ip addresses are very
slow, and ftp keeps timing out. Any suggestions appreciated.

/root/Office51 is a bad place. Normal users don't have access to /root -
normally only root has. So to give access to non-root users, you would
also make root's home directory accessible to non-root users. I suggest
installing to /opt/office51, /usr/local/office51 or /usr/office51. All
users would have access to these directories as standard, and you would
not expose root's directory.

Just say 'Cancel'. You only need the driver disk, if you need some strange
drivers - for PCMCIA for example. However there are some driver disks in
/images on your CD for some hardware. But chances are, that you don't need
it.

Hey-
I am currently trying to set up ProFTPD to run as an anonymous FTP

Grrr I am in troubles here: I was able to sucessfuly chroot the named, but I am
failing miserably on the apache httpd.
My setup is a 2.2.16 box with suse base system on it. My goal is to chroot the
apache into the /chroot/apache cage
I have followed the instruction found on page http://penguin.epfl.ch/chroot.html
but it seems like my httpd has troubles finding some files. The only difference
between his inscruction and my install is that I have my apache under
/chroot/apache/www instead of /www/apache as he has.
I have done everything 1:1 as in the instruction twice, but still when I try to
start apache with the command:
cuba:/chroot/apache # chroot /chroot/apache /www/bin/apachectl start
I am getting this DAMNED error:
httpd: bad user name www
/www/bin/apachectl start: httpd could not be started
Here are the contents of the
/chroot/apache/etc/passwd
www:x:888:888:Web Account:/webhome:/usr/bin/False
/chroot/apache/etc/group
www:x:888:
/chroot/apache/etc/shadow
www:*:10882:-1:99999:-1:-1:-1:134537804
the rights on those files are ok too.
I also had problem earlier on when I tried to move my full blown apache compile
(PhP4 + SSL + Apache) that it just could not find the damn libpdf.so.0 despite
the fact that it was there available, in the correct directory (ldd checked).
What is going on ? please advise.

I would suggest, that you turn off the virus-detection in the BIOS (which
is - i guess - the thing you are talking about). Many of these
BIOS-virus-detection-things are broken and only accept clean M$-only boot
sectors.
Also consider upgrading your LILO. Newer versions don't have the 1024cyl
limit. It just needs a 'lba' or something like that in the lilo.conf.
An alternative would be to use loadlin. Then you could boot to dos and
load linux with loadlin. You could setup some DOS-menu to boot linux and
DOS...

Hi, all :)
I'm trying to coax my recent linux install to reach out and touch the
'net. I've made some progress but I need a little reassurance and/or
advice.
I'm using a LanCity cable-modem; my isp is adelphia.net; my pc is a
pentium2 300MHz with 64M RAM. My Slackware install is the UMSDOS
based BigSlack from Slackware 7.1
I ran [netconfig] and the probe didn't find my Allied Telesyn
AT-2000PNP Ethernet Adapter.
>From Win98, I gathered that the card resides at io:0x220 and is
assigned to irq:5 by WindowsPNP.
>From Linux I added the following lines to /etc/modules.conf:
alias eth0 ne
options ne io=0x220 irq=5
>From Linux I added the following line to /etc/rc.d/rc.modules:
/sbin/modprobe ne io=0x220
Rebooted Linux but it still didn't recognize my eth0 card.
I changed the line in rc.modules to:
/sbin/modprobe ne2k-pci
on the advice of some messages I found on the 'net that said some
cheap ne2k compatibles work better with the -pci entry than the stock
ne entry.
>From Linux, I ran [pnpdump] which confirmed the address as 0x220 but
choked on the IRQ detection as follows:

Having done all that, I rebooted Linux again and I think I made some
headway because after the boot message "Going multiuser..." I see the
following two lines:
Attempting to configure eth0 by contacting a DHCP server...
dhcpcd[69[: dhcpStart: ioctl SIOCGIFHWADDR: No such device
Unfortunately, I did so many things before rebooting that I don't know
what changes were productive or why (pfeh - stupid newbie! <g>)
I'm guessing at this point that dhcpcd isn't installed, or that it's
installed but not configured -- does this sound right? If so, should
I just look for a how-to on dhcp?
Any help will be greatly appreciated -- thanks in advance! 8-)

Subject: Adding NFS partition during installation of RH6.2 ?
Date: 11 Jul 2000 14:43:35 GMT
Hi all,
I'm installing RH6.2 on PCs at work.
To my great surprise, I could not find familiar (from earlier releases)
"Add NFS" button on the partitioning window in graphic install of RH6.2.
Has it been removed on purpose? I have a bunch of older machines with
small disks which mount the whole /usr from a server. Without
this "Add NFS" option I won't be able to install the new release on
those machines.
any hints?
regards, Michal.

Let me add some thing, Once the authentication process is done, the file
transfer in POP3 and FTP also telenet is very fast.
Now I am at a loss how to speed up this connection and authentication
process. When I ping, response time 10ms that is really fast.
