I have had this same problem.. on two systems I

I can install linux on a single drive after

I think the best way to remove linux partitions
is to use a utility called delpart.exe you can
find it on the internet by doing a search for
delpart. This should be able to remove any Linux
partitions and NTFS patitions. Then you can go in
and re-fdisk the drive.
I hope this helps

I'd prefer to compile my own. Do you know how these kernels were
backported? Do I just need to replace the ppp stuff in the newer
kernels with whats in the later kernels? Are there security issues with
the later ppp stuff that were fixed in the newer kernels? Thanks.

I'm new to linux. So you know that. I've installed the newest Red Hat
distribution 6.2. And now I want my machine on the internet, except that
it's kinda difficult with ISDN. I got a TeleS BRI 16.3c PnP card, and I've
heard that it's even trickier with this card. Although I have a PnP card I
don't get the impression that Linux finds it.
Here's what I do:
I run isdn-conf in Gnome. I choose the right card and uses the settings from
windows. Then I add my isp. I click Apply, and got to the Dial-tab. I click
START and restart the computer. But when linux is loading the kernels, I get
the errormessage "Could not initialize /dev/ttyS0." and "Could not find
ippp0. PPP kernel support not installed". I have tried to install the ppp
package found on the install-CD several times and I've checked that it's the
newest version.
I've tried to add a PPP device in linuxconf, but it doesn't bear the right
name "ippp0" but "ppp0".
So, how can I install my ISDN-card correctly?
And how can I get the PPP to work?
Thanks for all the help I can get.

Just pick the largest range you can for each. Stick with standard VGA
for the resolution (640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, etc). You'll be fine.
Go to support.intel.com for linux i810 drivers, and make sure you know
how to edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config file manually.

Maybe it's changed recently, but when I first tried Proftp as an
alternative to WU-FTP, I couldn't find any sample on www.proftpd.net
or www.proftpd.org to be used after installing the RPM package (an
all-too-common experience with open-source software...)
Here's sthing to get you started. Create a user named "amy" using the
useradd command, backup /etc/proftpd.conf, and copy/paste the
following. Don't let the word "Anonymous" bother you: It doesn't mean
this account is accessible to anyone (notice the "AnonRequirePassword
on"). Maybe Proftp started as an anon FTP type of software, and they
included guest/real access later on.
ServerIdent off
ServerType inetd
DefaultServer on
Port 21
Umask 022
MaxInstances 30
User nobody
Group nobody
DisplayConnect /etc/proftpd.welcome
<Anonymous ~amy>
AnonRequirePassword on
User amy
Group amy
MaxClients 10
DisplayLogin .msg
DisplayFirstChdir .message
GroupOwner dev
Umask 007
HideUser root
<Limit LOGIN>
Order allow,deny
Allow from 192.168.0.,.acme.com
Deny from all
</Limit>
<Limit READ DIRS>
IgnoreHidden on
</Limit>
<Limit DELE>
DenyAll
</Limit>
<Directory /*>
AllowOverwrite on

Proftp really does offer much more than wu-ftp, and doesn't require
too much fiddling to secure, unlike its counterpart.

I've done this and it doesn't work. The two versions use slightly
different formats, which is a huge oversight by Netscape in my opinion.
The other issue is security. Putting your mail files on a FAT partition
pretty much ensures that any normal user will be able to read your
mail. (If not from linux then surely from windows!)

If you're worried about security, you can also get it to work with
encrypted passwords by enabling this in the smb.conf file and setting up
a simple smbpasswd file.

Try editing smb.conf to make your machine public.
Also, you'll have to either enable encryption in smb.conf and set up a
password file or disable encryption in windows (search for
"plaintextpassword" in regedit)

Just download and install the RedHat 6.1 or 6.2 XFree rpm. Then
download and install the intel drivers.

Yes. Mount your windows partition something like this (as root):
'mount -t vfat /dev/hd?? /mnt/win' (where /dev/hd?? is your win98
partition)
You can also mount it permanently through fstab.

I assume that you are getting your mail via POP. Can you use IMAP? Is
there an IMAP mailserver available?
I ran into this same problem, and solved it by leaving my mail on the IMAP
server, then being able to read it via Netscape on whatever system I
booted. I also used Netscape's IMAP from other platforms, such as HP/UX.

Challenges are good :)) You did not mention your network cards, I believe
that you will need two, one to connect to the DSL modem and one to
connect to your local network(even if that is just one computer for now).
Some good resources are:
http://www.linuxdoc.org -- has many indepth "HOWTO" for most anything
you might want to do on linux especially read the IP-Masquerade and
IP-Chains howtos
http://www.linuxnewbie.org -- Easier to understand help on how to do

Those and other similar sources should give you most if not all the
information you need to set up your linux box and firewall. This
newsgroup should also be a source of answers to any problems or
troubleshooting questions you might have.
Good Luck,

Subject: Help! How to partition HD for dual Linux / DOS-Win3.11 system overcoming 8GB
DOS limit
Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2000 18:42:23 GMT
Sorry if this is a FAQ. If it is, a pointer would be appreciated (for some
reason comp.os.linux.answers is empty on my ISP's server (primenet).
I'm going to set up a new system (128MB 700 MHZ Athlon) as a dual DOS/WFW3.11
and Linux system. It has a 30GB Western Digital hard drive (and a Zip drive).
Though it will eventually become a Linux-only system for quite a while I must
get work done using the DOS/WFW software I'm familiar with. My current problem
is the DOS 8GB hard drive barrier. I would like to have DOS programs be able to
read Linux's files and Linux be able to read the dos data files.
I got the WD "cure", but it seems to muck with the MBR and/or do other things
that make me feel their solution is likely to interfere with Linux or at least
make the DOS partitions unavailable to Linux programs.
I can't be the only one who wants to run Linux and DOS on a large drive. Anyone
have a more transparent solution then WD's Data Lifeguard Tools? (I am quite
experienced with DOS's way of doing things, but a total newbie to Linux, so
please be gentle.) I'm sure that just running Linux with DOS emulation and
perhaps some WINE is in my future, but for now I must have a DOS working system
while I ease up to speed with Linux. Can anyone suggest a partition layout for
the DOS/WFW partitions (at least 8GB) that will let me smoothly add Linux
partition(s) at a later time while having both systems access each other's data
files?
Thanks in advance
