Subject: usb mouse problems after installation of new motherboard
Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2001 21:21:31 +0800
Hello, I installed a new motherboard, (aopen, ak73 with 900M athlon
Thunderbird processor). Redhat 7.0 with kernel 2.17(ish). On start up
Kudzu came up and tells me I have new devices and points to USB
intellimouse. (which it is). I configure it, and startup continues, when it
comes to starting gpm I get:
gpm[533] oops (5) and some message that gpm could not be started.
In my startup log I have got the message about USB device not accepting new
address - error 110.
I have tried mouseconfig, but same thing happened.
Have tried uninstalling and then installing but still no joy.
I have been at this point before, and got over it by reinstalling
(upgrading, or downgrading if you will) redhat 7.
What is the easy way to fix this?
Thanks
Arnold Kaars

Subject: router

Hello All,
I am looking to set up something like the diagram below. Has anyone done
this or seen this done?
The Internet
|
|
|
router.domain.com
192.168.0.1
203.2.75.1
|
|
|
HUB-----------------------server-1.domain.com
| 192.168.0.2
| 203.2.75.2
|
|
server-2.domain.com
192.168.0.3
203.2.75.3
I want it so that if someone connected to 203.2.75.3, no matter what port
etc. I want it so the "router" would forward the connection over the LAN to
server-2.domain.com
another eg: If someone was doing a portscan on server-1.domain.com, I would
want EVERYTHING forwarded to server-1.
What I am trying to say that is I don't want anything to be filtered or
stamped at the router. I just want the router to forward on the connection.
Thanks everyone,
Regards,
Mark

The thing is that imediately after reboot the fsck program can fix the file
system properly. If you don't do this at that time but mount the file system
and use it then the problem becomes worse and often will become damaged
beyond repair.
For example if the fre space information is faulty you may re-alocate some
disk space that is already allocated to a file to a new file, and that would
destroy the first file.

Try to add a line containing only:
lba32
in /etc/lilo.conf and run /sbin/lilo. That worked for me.

They made it only accept mail from your local machine. If you want to
change that, edit /etc/mail/sendmail.mc and change this line:
DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp,Addr=127.0.0.1, Name=MTA')
to this line:
dnl DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp,Addr=127.0.0.1, Name=MTA')
and run m4 /etc/mail/sendmail.mc > /etc/sendmail.cf. If you made any
changes to /etc/sendmail.cf, you need to redo them as every change in
sendmail.cf is lost.

You might want to look into an NVIDIA GeForce 2 GTS or the geForce 2 MX
as both of these are supported in Linux and the drivers are readily
available at Nvidia's web site. The MX is the "Value" version of the
GTS. The GTS Runs great on my Linux box. The prices are dropping
considerably on these cards as well...

Yes, that's the "funny" stuff. Doing a RH7.0 first works, and then also after
upgrading to 7.1, even though I have had problem with the bootloader install,
but the emerg. disc worked, so I can get in and run lilo.
I am just unsure about these updates. Everyone seems to disadvice it.
Anyway thanks a lot for all the help.

OK, here's one to really puzzle over.
I want to set up my system so that when it detects an incoming call on the
modem line, as soon as the caller hangs up it starts a ppp connection to my
dial up ISP and sends a mail to me informing me of the IP address it has
been allocated.
I want to be able to use my box as a web server for testing purposes while I
am at college on their network where they won't allow me a Linux machine.
Problem is I have a dial up connection which is disconnected after 2 hours
so I can't just leave it on...
Any ideas about how to do this or what to research.
I was thinking maybe where to find logs of modem activity and a cron task to
check every minute or two is a call has come in...
Thanks

This happens if you are running X as root. For some reasons,
screensaver will work for other users.
To stop screen blanking:
xset s noblank
Then you can control the screensaver:
xset s off
or
xset s on

I've got two tulip compatible network adapters in my computer, but i don't
get them to work, as the first one should be used for pppoe (TDSL/
germany).
i configured it in KDE2, and got the message an icon will be available to

The normal network should work over eth1, but every action (ping etc) uses
eth0, which is connected to the tdsl adapter...

Get a GeForce2 MX card. They can be had for under $200 (usually around
$100-150), and offer excellent 2D and 3D performance at a very attractive
price point. These cards are sold by a variety of manufacturers under
various trade names, so do a little shopping first. Try www.pricewatch.com.

A simple search at http://www.google.com/linux/ for "linuxconf" will
show you need to try a search engine sometimes.

I believe redhat purposefully removed the parts of linuxconf they found to
be problematic and/or broken. That's why some parts are missing.
Here's a brief explanation from a post on the seawolf mailing list:

Are you logged in as root? If so, most screensavers will refuse to start. Read

hmmm, sounds curious, did you get hacked?
check
ls -al /usr/sbin/sendmail (if your sendmail is there)
lsattr /etc/mail/
ls -al /etc/mail/
checking logs (/var/log/...) can never be a bad idea, if this doesn't
help

Fix1: edit /usr/bin/java wrapper, replace instances of /usr/bin/cut with
/bin/cut
Fix2: if using kernel 2.4, there's an environment variable you need to set
for java to get the correct stack space (or something like that)... it's a
workaround for a bug in the JVM.
