While during LINUX boot time the sound card is not recognized, sndconfig doesn't
find a sound card either. So I'm not able to choose an appropriate irq and io
address and the sound card isn't making any sound.
The only message shown by sndconfig is that there is no modular sound enabled
(soundcore.o was not found in the module search path). A strange message because
during "make xconfig" I added sound card support and all ESS card stuff as modules.
I ran all the required make commands, the same as you mentioned. I also ran "make
install" and "lilo" to make sure the new kernel is installed corerectly.

Subject: Red Hat 5.2 Question about X and Another Level window manager setup
Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 07:12:03 GMT
I have a working installation of Red Hat 5.2, but I have only been
able to start X from the root directory. From the root directory, I
can log onto the internet, run Netscape, run wordprocessors, etc.
Whenever I try to start X from my home directory, X begins to load and
then crashes. I am using the Another Level window manager. I don't
understand why I am having this problem because, according to what I
have read, home directories in Red Hat will use default files for
Another Level in the /etc/X11 directory if there are no configuration
files present in the user's home directory. I tried putting my own
configuration files for Another Level in my home directory using
wmconfig, but the result was the same. These are the errors I am
getting:
/home/rick/.wm_style Permission denied
/home/rick/Xrootenv.0 Permission denied
/home/rick/.FVWM2-errors Permission denied
Warning
You selected Fvwm2 as your window manager, but your installation does
not appear to be functional. The executable /usr/X11R6/bin/fvwm2 was
not found on your system.
Resuming with TWM...
/usr/X11R6/bin/RunWM: /home/rick/.TWM-errors: Permission denied
_____________________________________________
The three files above which have Permission denied errors are not in
my home directory. There is an executable fvwm2 on my system because
I can run X as root.
Can anyone shed light on this problem ? If I need to perform some
system administration chores, could someone please point me in the
right direction ? Thanks.

Hi,
This won't work as the apach installation was 'upgraded to 1.3.12 using
the source package' which to my reading of it means a tarball. This was
a mistake as the control of the installed package has now been lost.
The benefits of the package management provided by rpm exceed the
'advantages' of latest code IMHO.

If the system was still under control of rpm then rpm -e apache would
uninstall apache...
Get your upgrades to SuSE from Rufus (http://rufus.w3.org/linux/RPM)

That depends on what you definition of "wordprocessor" is, or what your
definition of the word "is" is... just kidding. ;)

It *does* sound like a permissions problem. Perhaps you have not enabled
read/execute priviledges on the fvwm2, et. al. config files in $HOME
for user ``rick''. Check the permissions and post them if you feel
they are correct. Also, the permissions in /etc/X11 should look like:
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 Dec 23 1999 fvwm2 [and in there:]
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 16446 Sep 23 1999 system.fvwm2rc

You cannot recompile the entire SuSE Linux OS by just typing 'make' at
random ;o)
when you are in a directory which contains source code type 'make'
will look for a "makefile" which tells it what to do next =o)
If you want to recompile the kernel then I recommend you read up on
this before attempting it =o)

YaST1 also??? Really? This means your video card isn't even compatible

This refers to the YaST2 text mode. YaST2 is available via CD-ROM boot
only. The rationale behind that is that the hardware probing techniques
being used with YaST2 require a not-too-old machine in order to work
reliably.

The boot floppy uses text installation only - YaST1, that is.
IIRC YaST1 never changes the video mode during installation.

This uses a standard VGA text mode with standard refresh rate. Any
monitor / VGA should be capable of that.
Did you try that with the boot floppy that comes with 6.4?
Exactly how far do you get with that?
Kind regards

Well, I *assume* you tried this in /usr/src/linux ... However:
Suse does *not* (by default) install the kernel sources, so make
sure you have them. Once they are in place, check /usr/doc/howto,
there ought to be Installation-HOWTO.gz , Kernel-HOWTO.gz
(probably in the "en" directory) and lots of other info (These
files can be displayed with "less Kernel-HOWTO.gz", e.g.)
That should get you started, I hope.

Wine is still very much a work in progress. Rather than trying to

Wow, that all sounds a bit messy! Ive no idea what could be causing that.
Ive installed Corel Linux about 20 times (!) and Ive never seen that. Im not
gonna bring you through stuff like check if your keyboard is plugged in
properly etc. cause I know you're a beginner, not an idiot! It could be some
sort of hardware conflict but thats a complete guess. My advice is go out
and get a copy of Redhat. The installation program may be a bit more
complicated than Corels 3-step approach but its a solid distro. The lack of
input in Corel's installation means you dont even get to choose a mouse or a
keyoard! Try it and see. Otherwise, see if you can get another copy of the
Corel cd or try a different keyboard, just to make sure.
Hope this helps,

RH 6.1 has decided that kppp should be authenticated using PAM instead of
suid-ed root.
The easiest way to beat this is to replace the following line
inside your /etc/pam.d/kppp from:
#auth sufficient /lib/security/pam_rootok.so
to
auth sufficient /lib/security/pam_permit.so
save /etc/pam.d/kppp

Subject: RedHat 6.1 and IDE 40GB disk: problems beyond 8GB
Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 10:02:40 GMT
Hi,
(Summary: the RedHat 6.1 install program fails when it is just about
to start formatting the first partition that starts beyond the 8.4GB
mark. What could be causing this? Is this Linux, or just a good old
BIOS problem?)
I'm trying to install RedHat 6.1 on my new Maxtor 40GB IDE disk. The
PC has a Pentium system board. The BIOS cannot handle disk sizes
larger than 8.4GB, and thus lists the disk as 8.4GB.
Nevertheless, when booting from the RedHat 6.1 installation CD, the
kernel recognizes the disk as CHS=4982,255,63, meaning a 40GB disk. (I
assume Linux reads this from the disk, instead of consulting the PC
BIOS.)
When I remove the disk from the BIOS and start the RedHat
installation, the kernel still sees it as a 40GB disk.
And even when I have disabled the Maxtor "EZ-BIOS" (intercepts queries
to the BIOS and returns a disk geometry corresponding to 40GB instead
of the value that my BIOS would normally return), and start the RedHat
installation, the kernel still sees the disk as a 40GB disk.
Finally, when I specify the disk geometry at the RedHat install boot
prompt (something like "linux hda=4900,255,63 expert"), the kernel
recognizes it as CHS=4900,255,63.
So, obviously, the kernel "knows" that this is a 40GB disk. And it
totally ignores the BIOS'es opinion that its's only 8.4GB.
During the installation, I use fdisk to make the partitions. Fdisk
also says the disk has 4982 (or 4900 if that's what I've specified at
the boot prompt) cylinders. Creating the partitions works like it
should. But later on, when the install program is formatting the
partitions, the system collapses when the install program is just
about to start formatting the first partition that starts beyond
8.4GB...
As an alternative, I've used the Maxtor MaxBlastPlus software to
create the partitions, and have used fdisk only to change the
partition IDs to 83, 85 and 82. But this leads to the same problem
occurring when the install program is about to start formatting the
first partition that starts beyond the 8.4GB mark.
So, what is the problem here? The fact that the problem seems to be
related to crossing the 8.4GB mark, would lead you to think that it's
a BIOS problem. Especially as my BIOS can't handle disks larger than
8.4GB. But on the other hand: Linux seems to not use the BIOS'es idea
of the disk geometry at all. And when the install program is
formatting the partitions, I would say that Linux "talks" directly to
the disk controller, having nothing to do with the BIOS at that moment
at all.
Who can shed some light onto this problem?
Reactions to my email address (mailto: [EMAIL PROTECTED]) would be kindly
appreciated. TIA!
Cheers,
Frank

this happens when your provider changes your host name.
standard its local host, and its changed to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Then X can not connect to the new host and start any application.
edit /etc/sysconfig/network
change localhost into a name you like (eq mymachine)
edit/etc/hosts
be sure it contains at least
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain
127.0.0.1 mymachine.linuxfan mymachine
where linuxfan is a name you choose.
be sure /etc/host.conf contains at least:
order hosts,bind
reboot your machine
