installation. This has shown me, my PC CPU speed in MHz as 110.6085,
but my CPU is PII, 400 MHz.
So can anybody tell me, why linux telling me, wrong speed.

Subject: Linux beyond 1024 Cylinder
Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 15:26:11 +0200
Dear all,
I have configured my system (gateway PIII 500MHz, 256 Mbyte RAM, 18 GByte
HD) as follows:
Primary partition 1 (size 3 Gbyte FAT32) with Win98SE
Primary partition 2 (size 10 Gbyte NTFS) with Win2k
Primary partition 3 (size 5 Gbyte Linux Ext2) reserved for Linux
I have installed Win98SE and win2k which both work fine. I am using
partition magic v5 (including bootmagic v2) to make sure they boot. I am now
coming at a point where I should install Linux. I have reserved 5 Gbyte and
according to my colleague's I should split this one up into three
partitions:
1. Reserved for Linux bootsoftware
2. Linux data
3. Linux Swap
Questions:
Do I get problems with the 1024 Cylinder problem of the bootsoftware of
Linux? What can I do about it? What version of Linux (Red Hat) resolves this
problem? Tips are very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Bart Kooijman

Assuming this is a single-user home system you're talking about, you can
make mounting the vfat filesystem a bit smoother by using the umask
option; using that, you can get the filesystem mounted as root, but all
files on it will show up as mode 666 (777 for directories), so you have
full r/w access as any user. Another mount option that I like to use is
'quiet': it keeps chmod from complaining if you try to use it to set
permissions that don't work on vfat filesystems.
Read the mount(8) and fstab(5) man pages carefully; there's a lot of
interesting stuff there.

It maybe this...
With Alsa 0.5.8 (using SuSE Linux 6.4) I noticed that it installs
libasound 1.0.1 and yet the program is looking for libasound 1 you need to
copy the new file and rename it then put it back in the same lib directory.
then it seems to work ok

I'm sure you can ... You just need to install a proxy server on your
linux machine. That way you can connect to the internet through your
linux machine.
Let the win98 machine connect to the internet by using the linux machine
as a proxy.
Problem is .. I dont know wich program suites best for this purpes.

As long as your BIOS supports booting from beyond the 1024 cylinder you
should be OK. Older versions of the Linux loader lilo also had a problem
with the 1024 limit. The latest version of lilo fixes that.

Subject: Gnome Login Problems - And some desktop issues...
Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 15:17:30 GMT
Hello,
First, I'm running RedHat 6.2, Helix Gnome and Sawfish. Most things are
running fairly well with my present configuration, however I have a
couple really annoying bugs that I can't fix.
1) I've wanted to use the GUI login so that I could more easily switch
between different X-windows environments. However, I can't get the
login to work on all of my accounts. Initially it just worked as root,
at that point I decided to set it down and go back to logging in via the
console. However, I tried it again later and my primary user login
worked just fine. I expected that something had changed and that the
problem had been resolved, however, when I log in as any other user
(including ones that I've just set up now) it just never logs in. I
don't get an error, however, when I log in with my username and
password, the screen jiggles and then bounces back to the login as
opposed to bouncing forward to Gnome. I've tried this now with multiple
usernames and have rechecked the passwords to ensure that they were
correct. It also doesn't give the same error as when there is an
incorrect password.
Why can't I use the GUI to log in to gnome on all of my accounts!
2) I must have done something to the Sawfish environment, because I
didn't always have these irritating bugs, but I can't get rid of them.
First, I can't seem to resize most of my windows. I used to be able to,
but now when I click on the edge of the screen and drag it all I get is
the present size of the window. It doesn't change sizes which is really
annoying.
3) Possibly related to this (this might have something to do with focus
and shadow, but these terms aren't explained in Sawfish, so who knows
what I've adjusted), When I open a new window in Netscape, it appears up
on top, I can paste into it, I can move it, however, that isn't the
screen which accepts the keyboard input. So when when I reply to a new
message, it pops up in front of the screen, but before I click on the
panel icon on the bottom, I when I type it affects the screen below it
(the list of all my messages) and not the message that is on top and
that I want to be editing.
4) While I am talking about Netscape, has anyone figured out how to get
the address book working in Netscape 4.73, with Red Hat 6.2. It was
working for me fine under Caldera, but I've found the lack of this
feature extremely annoying. Unfortunately I haven't found a fix or an
easy way to migrate to another email program. Would like to use either
Mozilla M16 or Netscape 6, but both of them run noticably slower than my
current version of Netscape. Even if they don't have Netscape 4.73's
leaky memory problem..
Thanks Any feedback would be helpful!

I had the very same problem (unknown atapi 31) on some combinations of
motherboard/bios.
The problem went away if I set up the ls120 as slave of a master IDE HD.
The problem seems to be completely solved, no need for the above
workaround, in kernel 2.2.16 (the release notes talk about this)

I know fairly sure that the RH disk-druid tool will not allow you to
create /boot beyond 1024th cylinder, so make sure to use fdisk (RH6.1
does not give this as an option!) or else you will not be able to
install. I'm not sure if you can with fdisk, but just give it a try,
you'll know soon enough if it will be allowed by the RH installer.

When using the X-Window system, your keyboard mapping is done
via .Xmodmap. Put a line in .xinitrc pointing to .Xmodmap so
this file is read when you start X.

In the Ethernet-HOWTO it mentions that some older ISA cards don't like
to be loaded with the same name, so you have to do something like:
alias eth0 eexpress
alias eth1 eexpress

One thing you could do is
make uninstall
(This will remove all the files installed from the tarball)
Then uninstall the old apache using YaST (if any of it still exists).
That should leave you with a clean slate and allow you to reinstall the
stuff from the tarball. (you may wish to backup the config files before
uninstalling the rpm however).
