I'm using the one that comes with GNOME, once I pop in an audio cd, it
automatically launches and it seems to be playing. But there's no sound. I
have used the same computer for WIN98 (another harddisk) and it is playing
fine. I have thought that it might be due to file permissions so I logged in
as root, but it still didnt work. Is there any way to check if my sound card
drivers are properly installed?

Simply kill the X server (ctrl-alt-backspace), or use
Ctrl-alt-f2 to hop into a console.

Hello,

if you really trust the binary, you could set the SUID bit,
asuming the file is owned by root, "chmod 4755 filename", should work.

"man 2 chmod" for more info.

Hi gang,

Right off the bat, I want to tell you that gdm works for me like a charm
(yeah, it's too bad that by default xdmcp section is disabled in
gdm.conf file). However, I have a problem enabling kdm to work
properly. It works O.K when I'm at the system (let's call it console)
but cannot connect to it remotely using e.g. ReflectionsX if kdm is
running (not gdm). Again, there is no problem using xterm but a fully
blown X Windows session. How the heck do I enable it?

Thanks.

I am looking forward to try installing Linux for the first time.

my current config has Windows ME and Windows 2000 in a Dual boot mode

The Questions is: - is it possible to make a "tripple" boot that will
also include Red Hat Linux in the startup menu?

If so, how is it done??

RedHat is "famous" for it's bad ISDN support, which is why they will never

Looks good. You should add your isapnp call to your local boot-up
scripts.

That means that the card dials, gets a connect, but can't establish
a TCP/IP connection and hangs up.

Ah. It doesn't get an answer to the LCP-requests. Are you sure
that the number is correct and you have set the right ippp options?
I don't know where Mandrake wants to have these settings, but you
have to tweak them anyway (disable compression, remove server
authentication, etc.).

I think it would be helpful if you could tell us the particular problems
you've had trying to install the distributions you mention. I've no
experience with Redhat, but I think Slackware 3.4 (is that the 2.0.30
kernel?) is the one I installed several years ago on an old 386. It was
about as straightforward as you can get.

Is this what it actually says? If so, I'm surprised that Apache even
starts with such a badly malformed config file. The correct version of
that config file segment should be:

<Directory /home/*/public_html>
        AllowOverride FileInfo AuthConfig Limit
        Options MultiViews Indexes SymLinksIfOwnerMatch IncludesNoExec
        <Limit GET POST OPTIONS PROPFIND>

I have switched to the 2.4.4 kernel and I am trying to get my machine to

line but not at boot time.

First I can not login as root at a vc. I can su though so I am not
completely hosed. (I can login as root in 2.4.0)

Sound is completely not up until I run modprobe sb 3 times
(/etc/modules.conf confused)

esd hates /dev/sound/dsp and I have devfsd.conf wrong so that the
symlink is not getting created.

I believe that I have modules.conf and devfsd.conf wrong and would be
hap-hap-happy with any input.

Hi !

Could anybody explain what can i do in order to get Suse 7.1 recognize
the eth ? When booting (kernel 2.2.18 or 2.4), i keep receiveing
following messages

DHCLIENT: device eth is not available at the moment
DHCLIENT: Please check if the driver is setup correctly

Modules.conf has been changed to "alias eth0 rtl8139", after trying with

"8139too" - unfortunately with same results.

command "lspci" lists the Ethernet Controller Realtek 8139.
command "ifconfig" lists only lo (no eth0)!
command "ping 192.168.0.1" (router) delivers "network is unreachable"

The ethernet card works fine when booting w2k on same engine.

The more RAM you have, the less swap you are likely to need. I
use RH7.1 with 96MB RAM and 128MB swap. I don't recall a

Hi all.

I recenty have installed Mandrake 8.0, and I must say I am quite happy
with it. There is however a small problem with my modules and X. I am
using an matrox g400 video card, and am running xfree86 in DRI mode.
However, the required modules agpgart and mga are not loaded
automatically. If I do 'insmod agpgart;insmod mga' prior to starting X,
everything works fine, so the only problem is that these modules are not
loaded automagically. I was wondering if it is possible to force the
loading of these modules on bootup of my system or on startup of X by
tweaking some module configuration file or X configuration file? As a
temporarily workaround I have added 'insmod agpgart;insmod mga' at the end
of my rc.sysinit, but surely there has got to be a more elegant way of
dealing with this issue?

Thanks for any and all feedback.

Sincerely,
J.Smith
