I just replied to someone with the same problem- XF 4.0, right? Just
comment out the font line in your XF86Config file. You won't loose
anything- all my fonts still show up okay. I thought it is a conflict
between the Mandrake font server and XF86's font server, but I'm just
guessing.

The problem was in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults/XTerm.
There was a line saying that Delete would return <esc>[3~. When I
removed that, backspace worked correctly, although <del> still returns
the <esc>[3~.

Weird thing is that xterms launched from the consol work correctly.

I don't get it, but at least it works.
Thanks!

Hi,

I was wondering, is there a way of setting up Linux on a machine which
already has win98 without installing lilo / grub etc (i.e. the only
way to boot into linux would be via a bootdisk?
Which distributions allow this (I know that Mandrake 7.0 does not give
you the option).

Thanks in advance.

Well I checked all my symbolic links in the /usr/lib directory and
everything checks out. No broken links; libasound.so.1.0.1 is aliased
as libasound.so.1 and libasound.so, so that's not it. :-(

I looked into NIS; it looks easy enough to setup since it's built into
almost every Linux distro out-of-the-box, but I'm not sure it can do
what I need. NIS looks like it's great for sharing files, resources
etc. but can it provide a password validation server for a group of
client computers? And if so, how? I read a bunch of documents but they
were all about basically just setting up NIS but not how to use it to do
useful stuff like providing a password validation service...

Subject: Need TurboLinux 6 printer help

I can't get my printer to work. It's a Lexmark 1100. The doc
says use an HP 500C driver for printing under DOS.

The printer setup in TurboLinux 6.0 has no way to select the
printer model - just port, etc. <sigh> Other distributions,
except the old Slackware I have, included this in their printer
setup when installing.

Printcap says:

lp
        :sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp
        :mx#0
        :sh
        :lp=/dev/lp0
        :if=/usr/lib/filters/ifhp

Shouldn't the printer type - hp500c or whatever - be there
somewhere too?

if I use

lp printcap

I get

Get_local_host: hostname 'localhost' bad

I don't understand this at all.

I don't have a network (LAN) running either, or dialup. Maybe
that's what that 'localhost' is all about?

I suspect the filters (last) line is wrong too but I don't know
what to change it to. From what I gather from reading this is a
laserjet filter.

Why is it always the big Linux turnoff for me when I install a
Linux and can never get the printer, ppp, or a LAN working and
finally give up for another year in hopes of a future good Linux
book for Windows users and a Linux distribution with a good
install?<sigh> This stuff was a breeze to set up in Win. Why
does it still have to be so difficult after all these years in
Linux? I'm really trying but this Linux stuff is very difficult
with no local help.

Hello there. My company recently purchased a Dell PowerEdge 2400 with a
PERC2/DC RAID controller with the American Megatrends chipset. At first
we installed Solaris 8 x86 on it and that presented some problems, so
now
that we're switching to Linux I thought I would ask my question before
installation.

Anyway, has anyone out here installed RedHat 6.2 on a similarly
configured
2400? If so, did you run into any problems and how did you fix them?

I appreciate any and all help,

Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 19:09:03 GMT

Hi guys...

I am facing an annoying problem with one of my Linux boxes, which is
based on an AMD K6 CPU. I run RedHat 6.1 which is fine, but I need a
newer kernel, so I downloaded 2.3.99-pre9 and installed it using the
same procedure I have followed succesfully for several other similar
occasions (including 2.3.99-pre9 installations in other machines).

After installing the new kernel, I am rebooting the system and it stalls
exactly after the "Ok, uncompressing the kernel" message - the system
just freezes there. I tried 2.4.0-test3 and got the same result.

Because it doens't even start the booting process, /var/log/messages is
not written, so I don't have a clue as to what the cause of the problem
might be.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Dimitris

Subject: Sound card problem
Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 19:19:25 GMT

I'm having a problem getting my sound card (Creative Labs Sound Blaster
16C PnP) to work on my system (Debian Linux. Kernel 2.2.14. Dell
Dimension XPS T550). this machine is a dual boot NT/Linux. Sound works
perfectly in NT. The soundcard properties that the Audio device in NT
was set up with indicate that the following ports should be OK for use
with soundcard: IO=0x330, 0x388; DMA=anything but 03; IRQ=anything but
10. Using this information i have been trying to get sound up in Linux.
After doing a pnpdump into /etc/isapnp.conf, I uncommented what seemed
to be the appropriate lines for this sound card.
My /etc/isapnp.conf basically now reads:

################################
# (DEBUG)
(READPORT 0x0273)
(ISOLATE PRESERVE)
(IDENTIFY *)
(VERBOSITY 2)
(CONFLICT (IO FATAL)(IRQ FATAL)(DMA FATAL)(MEM FATAL)) # or WARNING

# Vendor Id CTL0070, No Serial Number (-1), checksum 0xE5.

# End dependent functions
 (NAME "CTL0070/-1[0]{Audio }")
 (ACT Y)
))
################################

I issue 'isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf' and I get the following out:

  Board 1 has Identity e5 ff ff ff ff 70 00 8c 0e: CTL0070 Serial No -1
[checksum e5]
  CTL0070/-1[0]{Audio }: Port 0x388; IRQ5 DMA1 DMA5
---Enabled OK

No errors, this is good. But then I issue 'modprobe sb io=0x0388 irq=5
dma=1 dma16=5' (sb being the driver that I think is most appropriate for
my card) and I get:

/lib/modules/2.2.14/misc/sb.o: init_module: Device or resource busy
Hint: this error can be caused by incorrect module parameters,
including invalid IO or IRQ parameters
  /lib/modules/2.2.14/misc/sb.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.2.14/misc/sb.o
failed
  /lib/modules/2.2.14/misc/sb.o: insmod sb failed

I've tried many many different values for IRQ and DMA following the
"Hint" advice - but i still get the same damn error mesgs! When I do an
lsmod I get:

  Module Size Used by
  soundcore 2372 0 (autoclean)
  lockd 30632 1 (autoclean)
  sunrpc 51588 1 (autoclean) [lockd]
  ntfs 33640 0 (unused)

  3c59x 18336 1

No other sound drivers are running as far as i can tell (soundcore
should not cause a conflict, right?)

What could be the problem?! Any ideas?!?!

Subject: Weird Squid Problem (or IE5..?)
Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 21:42:28 +0200

Hi everyone,
I have the following setup:

A private network with a squid proxy server connected to another (dial-up)
linux box. When a machine
on the internal network (as compared to the "network" directly to the
dial-up box) uses Internet Explorer
5 (Win2K) and visits www.msn.com then the squid proxy requests some more
pages from msn.com
(like arc5.msn.com and others) in 2 minute intervals. They are connections
to the http port on that machine
and are GETs. I monitored the network and found that the Windows box doesn't
(!) make that request...
Rather the squid proxy initiates the request....our dial up disconnects with
a 90 sec timeout and this request
causes another dial up....what can I say...telephone and internet are
expensive here in germany...

I was wondering if I overlooked some kind of option in the squid setup or
what is going on...
Maybe because the squid proxy box doesn't know that it's (real) internet
connection is a dialup
rather than the network connection it sees to it's gateway...?
Any ideas...?

Thanks for the help
jp
