The b stands for a block device. THat is normal. Have you checked the
permissions on kscd?

Those are very nice (and big!!) machines, I own 3 of them myself.
Unfortunatly RH Linux will not run on them. I have tried in spite of
the Red Hat docs saying incompatible. Also, there is no SMP support
(IIRC).

Digital UNIX (aka Tru 64) is a great choice for the box, there is a
non commercial version available from Compaq for like $99.00.

I ran across this problem as well. Gnome/Enlightenment is a memory hog.
I ran it on a machine similar to yours and it was extremely slow because
of swapping. I threw on 8 more meg of ram and it ran about 8 times
faster. I guess 24MB crossed the threshold where it no longer had
to swap.
Use a smaller, faster window manager like twm or fvwm.
You can do this by putting their names in your .xsession file.

Hi,

I have few questions about starting and ISP server

1. In order to let others connect to my PC via PPP should I run the pppd

on the server or what should I do?
2. How can I check the total connection time of a user and so to
disconnect him if he exceeds the maximum time?

Note: I am using Slakeware 7

I completely agree. And, you can take GNOME out of the picture altogether
by replacing the contents /etc/X11/xinit/Xclients with just the window
manager command, e.g. ``exec fvwm2''.

I amhaving an amazing amount of bad luck trying to install Linux on my
AMD k6-2 system.

Finally got it to the point where it has accepted my video card, then go
to monitor selection, and nothing works. Whether I probe or don't probe
the video card, even when I try the lowest possible resolution on my
monitor 640*480 (monitor will do 1024*768)

Any ideas what I am doing wrong here.

I am using RH 6.1 I got with a Dummies book; the dummies book is pretty
much a waste of time - not enough help whjen I got into trouble, though
the Linux docs on CD1 heleped me get a little farther along.

I am using a 540mg HD with a 50 meg partition used for dos (no windows)
and the rest assigned to linux partitions.

Any help would be great! Thanks in advance

Damir,

If you can do it, here's how I would proceed in attempting.

Check the documentation for your distribution of GNU/Linux to see what
the procedure is to do a TEXT-mode installation. Proceed normaly with
the installation, but you will probably need to select an advanced, or
Expert-mode setup, so that you can ensure you can select the packages to
be installed. You need to be able to ensure that you install a
Text-Mode configuration utility for configuring X.

Run the text-mode configuration, indicating during the configuration
that this is an ega video card, or alternately, specifying the video
resolution to be used as 640x400, and NOT 640x480, which is VGA mode.
Many of the popular video configuration utilities will install many
video modes with lots of timings to chose from for each resolution.

These would be immediately visible when examining the XF86Config file.
You could open up your config file and "comment out" or disable any
resolution information, except for the 640x400 lines. Also, when
specifying the maximum vertical refresh frequency, specify 60hz and for
the horizontal scan rates, indicate the range of 25~32kHz

This will cause the vid config utility to write a config file with data
for frequency rates the ega card can handle.

Valentin Guillen

Hello,

I have a Linux RH6.2 dual boot PC with two speakers and a Creative
soundblaster 16 PnP (WDM) soundcard. Although this soundcard is not
"supported", I wonder if there is a way to make it work. On NT W2K,
no problems (although it did not work before I connected the speakers).

I have used sndconfig to set up the PC to use SB 16. And this seems to
be successful (plays a sound). The sound services (three kinds) starts
up with status OK at boot time.

However, I am neither able to play mp3 files or other audio formats,
(like .au). Hissing or scratch sounds (basically noise) is all I am
able to hear. I do not use a separate MP3 player.

I have tried several MP3 supported products (front ends), e.g.
mpg123, xmms, splay etc without any luck. For example, xmms seem to
play the MP3 songs (can see the time elapsed etc) but I am not able
to recognise any songs (only low noise).

Any suggestions?

I have installed Mandrake 7.2 on my PC and installed Xfree86 v4.0.
On start up, once X has started, the PC seems to go into a loop just
switching resolution over and over again. I assumed at first it was
simply X testing the resolutions/depth/frequency settings, but it was
doing this for 20 minutes.
I atempted to fix it by removing all settings except 800x600x16bpp in
an attempt to at least get the desktop up and running, but to no
avail.
Has anyone come accross a similar problem before?
My next stage is to install the Voodoo 3 driver, but AFAIK I am
currently using just the SVGA driver.
It all seemed pretty stable under various V3 variants of Xfree, but
seems stuffed under Xfree 4.

I'm trying to install Red Hat Linux v6.2. It failed with the 6.0 install

install recognizes my video card chipset and RAM (Rage 128/16Mb) fine,
just not the monitor (Proview/EMC Multisystems 768M). Since the specific
montor isn't listed, I'm choosing generic, with the default refresh
settings of 31.5 hz horizontal, 60 hz vertical. I've tweaked with the
setting, knocked the refresh down to the minimum the manufacturer says the
monitor will do, and the best I get is either a black screen or an
extremely distorted screen when I attempt to test the video settings.
Obviously it CAN work since the graphical install screen runs OK. Anyone
have any success with this particular monitor or know what the correct
settings should be?

There is no 1 Gig limit. Are you talking about the 1024 cylinder

You haven't showed us your partition table. Is the partition that holds
your kernel, the one you're booting from, contained within the first
1024 cylinders of your disk? If not, you have to either repartition or
get a newer version of lilo. The newer versions of lilo get around the
1024-cylinder limit, if your BIOS supports it, or so I've read on this
newsgroup.

I'm a most unlikely giver of advice on Linux, but I've just been through
two days of related problems, and have solved a similar set ofproblems,
so here goes ...

My hardware: Dell Dimension XPS T600, approx. 30GB disk.

It came with Windows; however, I decided to redo everything while
installing Linux.

My first try, via both Windows FDISK and RH 6.2 FDISK was:

Partition 1: Windows FAT32, 8GB (or 1024 cylinders -- ironically)
          2: Linux 3 GB
          3: Linux swap

I installed Win98, then Linux. And just as you say, when booting Linux,
I got the dreaded ... "LI".

It turns out that Linux cannot see beyond 1024 cylinders for its
bootable area.

So, the current solution:

Part.1: Windows FAT32, 4GB
     2: Linux / 3 GB
     3: Linux swap 250MB
     4: Windows Extended D: 10GB, E: 11GB

(incidentally, I have another Linux machine, this one is primarily for
Windows).

If you scan other recent messages, I think you'll see also advice
regarding placing a small '/boot' partition in the early part of the
disk.

Maybe relevant, and I'd be interested in comments ... When I remade
part. 1 as 4GB (using both Windows and RH FDISK), it seemed that Windows
still saw it as 8GB -- this aftern making sure to write the new table,
restart the machine etc. Then, it appeared that LILO was still on the
MBR! So, I tried (Windows) FDISK /MBR, followed by another round of
repartitioning, and that worked.

If any expert can provide some summarising guidelines/principles on
problems of this sort, I'd be grateful.

There were other problems (the total experience lasted two days!), but I
put those down to total carelessness and anxiety on my part.

BTW, when you're in real trouble you find out who your friends are: I
have a number of books on Linux -- some bought because they seemed to
match my (low) level of systemes admin. expertise; however, regarding
the problem under discussion, they gave no help whatsoever, just
repeated whatever configuration they had -- usually excluding dual boot.
It was only Welsh, Dalheimer and Kaufman, Running Linux, 3rd ed.,
O'Reilly that gave any worthwhile help on partitioning for dual boot.

Minor gripes about RH 6.2 installation menus:

- you are invited to click on a button 'Do not install LILO' (default
unset); now if I was to look at that 100 years, I'd click on it -- even
though I want LILO installed. I think there is a general
user-interface/programming principle -- avoid negative booleans/flags.

- the invitation to select FDISK is very easy to miss.

Hope this helps,

Jon C.
