Got it now! What I'm going to do now is borrow an old Epson (or
whatever) dot matrix printer and get that printing plain text
from Linux. _Then_ I'll try the 1100 and driver after I'm sure I
can at least print.

IMHO the world certainly needs some good Linux setup software -
I've tried several distributions and have not found it yet. My
system is simple - no PnP or PCMCIA, standard old VGA card,
external modem, and IDE CD-ROM and HD. Think your beta would
work? My system couldn't get more screwed up. Does it help set
up ppp and Samba too?

If you do a RH install of type 'custom', you'll see that they
create a /boot partition first on the disk. That keeps the
kernel in the first 1024 cylinders.

A /boot of 32MB is plenty big enough. Stick the '/' partition
pretty much anywhere you want.

The RH installer does not like /boot being over 1024 cylinders, and is
prone to giving misleading error messages. This may be the snag. Try
creating a smallish /boot partition (20M) first, then as big as you want
for the rest. I have several partitions over 1G on RH6.2. I have never
had a problem, but always had a separate boot partition too.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello,

I've got RH 6.2 with GNOME running on an INTEL 166Mhz, which runs just
fine.
Next I want to install an ISDN card and I've got problems.
The ISDN card is a Accex passive PCI card with a WINBOND w6692 chip.
isdn4k-utils and insdn-conf can work with these cards according the
manual, this with the HiSax.o driver.
After installation 'kudzu won't recognice the card. It looks like the
system can't work with it.

The function 'lspci -v' recogize the card afterall with the following
output:
-Class: 0080
-IRQ 9
-Memory at f5eef000
-I/O ports at d000
-Flags: fast devsel
-Unkown device 5478 --this can be true, because it's not listed in
'/usr/share/pci.ids'.

The file '/proc/pci' recognizes the card also, only with more output
'Bus 0, device 10, function 0', and 'Unkown Class'.
This looks strange because "lspci -v' gives Class: 0080 .

'lsdev' does not list the card, there is no IRQ 9 in the output.
This is also in the output of 'procinfo'.

How do I solve this, can I force an IRQ setting with 'setpci' or is this
end of story.
Could somebody give me an example of the 'setpci' instruction.

Thanks,

Hans van Leest

Subject: Red hat setup

Hello to all!

I just installed redhat 6.0 in the intel PC and I'm really having a hard
time in installation. First of all, I cannot get the LILO
installed. This is why I have to put the bootup disk every time I wanna
load Linux. I read some book which talked about the 10 bit
addressing. So is it necessary to get a smaller partition just for the
boot loader? I was thinking of swap. Anyway it didn't work the way I
want and I go ahead with the rest of installation. Finally I decided to
format and try again. But I cannot use the fdisk to delete the linux
partition either. According to the SAMS book, they advise me to use Disk
druid to do the partition during the installation of redhat. But I just
can't delete the partition done by disk druid with fdisk. Any clue???
Please help.

On every Linux I used you can change from Graphical login to command-line login

by using Alt-Ctrl-F1 to F6. Or do you mean that you want to have the
command-line login
after every boot-up?

If the card is working, you can see in the system logs which driver(s) are
available: shortly after booting you can run "dmesg | less", or you can
look at a logfile named something like "/var/log/kern.log".

Hi-

I have an old P133 running Mandrake 7.1. Currently when it boots, I
can see it starting all kinds of crap (you know, with the
green "[PASSED]" or red "[FAILED]" markers), which I'd rather it not.
For example, it tries to detect USP stuff (my computer dosn't have
USB!) and it does some raid stuff, starts httpd, starts sendmail etc.
I'd like some information on how to turn this stuff on and off. I'm
not interested in fancy gui tools either, I'm trying to learn the
basics so no X here (it runs like a dog anyways!).

Also, does anyone know of a good site I could go to and learn about all
this stuff? Thanks.

The only option is to set up your DNS server with appropriate records

There was a Perl script in the "DNS and BIND" O'Reilly book which
would convert an /etc/hosts file into a DNS zone file.

No. Read the previously mentioned book, or the online documentation
(called the BOG) which comes with BIND.

According to the instructions on Sun's download site, the .bin file
is an executable, you just run it to install Star Office.

By the way, I want to warn you that you should be careful when you install
StarOffice if you use KDE. The install wipes out all of your KDE settings and
tells you that a new version of KDE has been installed. This wasn't a huge
problem for me until I went to my KDE address book and found all of the entries
wiped out. I was not pleased. Just a heads up.

Hello,

I am not sure if "font aliases" is the right term. However, what I need to
do is: Change the font to which font names like "Courier", "Helvetica" are
aliased. I need to be able to substitute different fonts (for a different

allow to specify fonts by their standard pattern *-*-*-...-*.

Could someone help me with an advice, please?

I looked at font.alias files in font/* directories, and they don't seem to
describe aliasing for the default font names.

Which distribution (i.e., which man version) do you use?

Do you or root have the MANPATH environment variable set?

Is the directory containing the man-page source (ls.1 or ls.1.gz) readable
by you? (Try /usr/man/man1, /usr/share/man/man1, and anything else that
looks promising.) Is the man-page source readable by you?
