Lilo took a dump on my machine last night where when you boot up it
just comes up LI and never goes any further. This has happened before,
and all I had to do was act like I was doing an up grade and just tell
it to put LILO back on the mbr. Well it ain't working this time. I
have even reinstalled completely, yet it won't update the mbr. Any
ideas out there

Read the CD-Writing-HOWTO and the "/usr/doc/mkisofs-*/README.eltorito"
files.
It explains how to make a bootable (eltorito) CD.
Note: You should not try to put more than 620MB on the CD, do to file
system
overhead.
Here is a brief example of how to build the CD from the documentation.
# export CDROOT=/home/user/images/test-cd/
# mkdir $CDROOT
Put the CD's contents into $CDROOT, and make a boot directory if you
havent already.
# dd if=/dev/fd0 of=$CDROOT/boot/boot.img
# cd $CDROOT
# mkisofs -b boot/boot.img -c boot/boot.catalog -o ../bootcd.iso .
The boot.catalog file should be created automaticaly, and the CDs
iso9660 image
will be created into the ../bootcd.iso file.
Here are the instructions to mount CDs iso9660 image to verify it.
# mount -t iso9660 -o ro,loop=/dev/loop0 bootcd.iso /mnt/cdrom
# cdrecord -v speed=2 dev=0,6,0 -data cd_image

Subject: nvidia video card install problem

I just got Caldera OpenLinux 2.2. for my PC (also running Win98) with a
NVidia Vanta 32MB AGP video card and installing by booting from the CD-ROM.
Durring installation (using lizzard) I get:
NVIDIA Unknown chipset (0x002c) rev 17
in the video card configuration page. Trying a video card probe or testing a
video resolution causes the screen to mess-up and lock-up, although the
installation program seems to still be working (CD and HDD activity).I've
tried Ctrl-Alt-Bksp and Ctrl-Alt-Del but nothing worked. If I don't try any
tests, then the screen still messes up after installation just before the
logon process. Durring the installation, the 'tetris' game works fine and
the screen is fine (except when I test or probe).
According to the Caldera web-site, NVIDIA cards aren't supported but there
are X server patches/drivers available for the chipset.
My question is: how do I install a new driver if I can't even get into linux
in the first place because installation never completes? Can I force the
install wizzard to load a generic VGA Xserver? (what would the command line
be) Or can I install Linux for character-only mode?

I am looking to secure a separate section of my website and am running into
some problems.
I'm not exactly sure how .htaccess is used and what I need to do to set it
up correctly.
So far, I have created the file, .htaccess :
AuthUserFile /usr/local/apache/acctman
AuthGroupFile /dev/null
AuthType Basic
AuthName "password"
<LIMIT GET POST>
require valid-user
</LIMIT>
I have created a separate directory to be protected and copied .htaccess
into it.
In httpd.conf, I created an alias, and underneath it wrote this :
<Directory "/usr/local/apache/members">
AllowOverride None
Options None
Order deny,allow
</Directory>
If anyone could tell me what I'm overlooking, it would be greatly
appreciated. Thankyou!

I would like to reduce the bell volume of X.
I'm running XF863.3.6 on a dual Celeron Abit BP6
motherboard.
The connecter from the motherboard goes to a small speaker
in the front of the case...
xset -q shows the default of volume 50 pitch 400 duration
100.
When I try xset b 25 then make the bell sound, there is no
difference in the volume.
Using xset b 25 900 50 raises the tone and shortens the
duration, but the volume stays the same.
Is this normal? Is the speaker circuit of a PC incapable of
varying the volume?
Alternatively, is there a way of sending the X bell through
the sound card (via esd, for example)?

If I remember rightly, the fat round keyboard connecter is called an AT connecter.
The smaller diameter ones are calle PS/2 connecters. I believe that the two PS/2
connecters go to a single hardware interface.
Check that your /dev/mouse is a symbolic link to /dev/psaux.
Apart from that, I'm afraid I can't hlp much... I can't get my PS/2 mouse to work
either,
even though the PS/2 Keyboard is find...

hi,
first of all: do you use gpm? if so, you may first try to switchit off
(or deinstall it, resp.).
your problems may be caused by the mouse itself. i had got two
logitech-mice, which didn't work - i had to start XF86Setup _before_ i
started X, set the mouse type to "mouse man", type a (= "apply"), set
the mouse type to "ps/2", type "a" again, leave XF86Setup _without_
saving the changes and then start X.
a few weeks later i decided to no longer do such silly things, got rid
of the logitech mice, bought a standard 5$-ps/2 - mouse and all goes
well.
hope, that helps you, too.

It has nothing to do with the 1024 cylinder limit, it's just that the
RH gui partition wizard has always limited me to 1 gig partitions.
I think it's strange too.
I have been using RedHat since 5.0 and it has always done this
to me. I'll just fdisk and mke2fs it and it should be fine.

Following your post and Nix's insights, I've tried another variant on
this approach, creating a libmini-g++ with only what I need from libg++,
and taking the real libg++ right out. I'm getting promising-looking
results (compiles and links cleanly, and appears to run but needs more
testing).
This works by statically linking libmini-g++.a - at the obvious cost of
an extra 150Kb+ on my executable sizes - which are now significantly
larger than on FreeBSD (where the S/W has always worked cleanly).
> g++ -I. *.cc *.cpp -o my_program
I've used a slightly more sophisticated approach to build the mini-lib
as standalone. Since parts of my S/W are GPL and LGPL, that'll leave
users the option to use mini-g++ or the real thing.
Testing over the weekend - round tuits permitting.

OK. That sounds good in a way, but I assume it's not open source ?
And tools will be extra, and I won't be able to write my own drivers

In that case, it might almost be as well to go down the NT route... :(

You are probably using the stock SVGA X client driver. Get the driver
